Re: AC3 Encoder Quality in nightlies

I've been doing some testing of the DTS -> AC3 conversion between eac3to (via ClownBD) and with my latest nightly build of HandBrake (3602) and the soundtrack provided by eac3to is significantly louder than the conversion done by HandBrake. My test subject is the opening few chapters of T2 (the futu...

Re: Encoding Time Comparisons

Since encoding is almost always CPU-bound I'd love to see a large listing for Handbrake encoding times on multiple systems using a standard DVD (or other source) and specific settings. I think a "Benchmarks" sub-forum within the main HandBrake forums would be good idea to collect this inf...

Re: multiple audio tracks not recognized

The Apple TV only shows the multiple audio tab if you encode more than the "standard" 2 tracks required (1 AAC & 1 AC3), for example, if you have a third track that may be a director's commentary or an alternate language. If you only have the 2 tracks of the same language then the Appl...

Re: Advanced Bluray/HDDVD Workflow & Features Discussion

Hi Guys You had a look at this: http://www.makemkv.com/ . Just run this on my iMac - it rips the Blu Ray to MKV but basically untouched (i.e. no conversion). I've just done it with my Falling Down Blu-Ray, then fed the resultant MKV into HandBrake and worked like a charm. As a bonus the chapter mark...

Re: Advanced Bluray/HDDVD Workflow & Features Discussion

Just to chip in another method now that TSMuxer is available for Mac. My workflow has been to create an m2ts file that HandBrake can read direct from the blu-ray disc using TSMuxer (under Parallels and only keeping the streams i want) - not to rip the the disc first via AnyDVD, extract the streams w...

Re: ATV 2.2: What you can and can't do with multiple soundtracks

Frankly I cannot say that I disagree, in fact I have a patch floating around here which does just that. I keep that patch under lock and key and re-apply it everytime i do a fresh checkout of the SVN. It's great for the audio naming and in fact i have gone back and re-encoded all my DVD's (and now ...

Re: Average HD Filesize?

I've been doing quite a bit of testing with HD sources (my own Blu-Ray rips) and have tried various methods. As with everything I'm trying to get a balance between file size and bitrate, without killing the ATV. As refulgentis has mentioned it is all down to source, and 2 movies killing my ATV at th...

Re: AppleTV 2.3 update breaks AC3 5.1playback?

Slightly off topic: In response to your question on IRC Dynaflash about 2 audio tracks with differing names, it still doesn't recognise the AC3 by default - you have to select it. However, as before, it does remember it as default the next time. Responded here as i have no IRC client installed at th...

Re: AppleTV 2.3 update breaks AC3 5.1playback?

Yep - just done a quick test and created 2 files, one with AC3 only and one with both AAC & AC3. The AC3 only movie had no sound, the one with both tracks played the DD5.1 track.
Glad i did all mine with the preset defaults for audio.

Re: AppleTV 2.3 update breaks AC3 5.1playback?

I'd like to report that the update has NOT affected any of my encodes, with the DD5.1 soundtrack working no problem. I can also confirm the shiny HD logo does now appear in the Movies section.
Video Playlists too - bonus

You may want to see this post: http://forum.handbrake.fr/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=7326&start=0&st=0&sk=t&sd=a . Not sure what platform you are on but i applied Dynaflash's patch to the MacGui and this works perfectly on my Apple TV. So, for a standard DVD with a commentary track, i se...

Re: [SVN 1797] Doesn't encode first 120 secs of h.264 TS files

Hi Guys, Sorry to drag this one up from a few weeks ago. I'm still having the issue of about the first 2 minutes of an M2TS file missing from the encode, however i've been doing some more testing. It seems (to me anyway) that the only films i have an issue with now are Sony movies - my problem child...

Re: [SVN 1797] Doesn't encode first 120 secs of h.264 TS files

Just done some more testing, this time on Spider-Man (directly onto the ripped M2TS), and unfortunately this starts to encode 30 seconds into the movie with SVN 1816. Again, VLC & MeGui both start correctly at the beginning of the movie on the same file. I passed the file through TSMuxer with th...

Re: [SVN 1797] Doesn't encode first 120 secs of h.264 TS files

Hi, Came across this thread as i had been seeing the same sort of issue as the OP, but i think the issue may also lie with the use of TSMuxer. I am using HB on a Mac (10.5.5), windows apps through VMWare Fusion, encoding for Apple TV. I have compiled the latest SVN (1816) and the encode now starts p...

Try turning off turbo. If that doesn't work, don't use 2-pass on that disc.
Yep, doing a single pass sorted it. Many thanks for the help

Movies with long running times

Hi Guys, Hoping you can help on an issue I'm having with movies that have long running times. I've been happily encoding my movie collection with no issues, however i've now come to a couple of movies that have a running time of about 3 hours (King Kong, BSG Mini Series, both UK PAL) and at the end ...

Re: PS3 not recognizing Handbrake MP4

OK - just to chip in my 2 cents. The files produced by Handbrake using the PS3 preset play perfectly fine on my PS3, both directly from the HDD and from my iMac using MediaLink to make it a DLNA server.
As Jbrjake suggests i would try playing the file directly from the PS3 to rule out your NAS

Do you know what the PS3 does support for chapters? Everytime i start up a film it shows the chapters option at the bottom of the screen but it's obviously blank because, as you say, Sony will never support Apple's specific constructs.

Ok - if i certainly has HDMI ports then it will be able to handle 5.1 PCM. You don't need HDMI 1.3 for this, 1.1 will be fine

Re: PS3 Encoding Hit and Miss...

Hi, Just looking at your model type and according to Yamaha's website it doesn't mention anything about having HDMI ports on it. If you don't have this, you will not be able to get 5.1 PCM from the PS3 - your best route to get 5.1 on your PS3 is to carry on what you are doing - MKV2VOB. I'm not enti...

Re: PS3 Encoding Hit and Miss...

Hopefully Sony will either support the .mkv container through the XMB which will allow me to cut out the mkv2vob step, or work out how to do 6 Channel AAC in MP4's and I will move back to MP4's and skip the mkv2vob. The PS3 supports MP4's with 6 channel AAC now - it converts it internally to 5.1 PC...

Re: 5.1 Audio for ps3 and appleTV

Hi, It can be done, but you need to be willing to checkout and compile handbrake yourself (guide in the wiki) and go back to Revision 1271. Before 1272 the audio options allowed you to select AC3 passthru as track 1 and 6 channel discrete as track 2. This way you would end up with one MP4 that would...

Re: AppleTV to support Dolby5.1 Natively

Not to fan the flames of the "How do i get the SVN" brigade, but this latest build rocks. Selecting the 1st soundtrack as AC3 and the 2nd track as 6 channel discrete gives me 1 file that a) Plays in DD5.1 on my aTV and b) Plays 5.1 AAC on my PS3. Too bad the PS3 doesn't recognise AC3 in MP...
