Re: Copy DVD without recompressing video

I used to do this same process using MPEG Streamclip. It lets you load all the VOB files and combine them into a single MPEG file. No encoding. I did run into some issue with dropped frames and it seemed to be limited to a max of 4 GB. Anything larger would not play in QT/Front Row which is what I w...

I may have interpreted the question incorrectly. I was asuming that the purpose of trying to get HB to open the file(s) was to be able to create an MP4 out of it. I was suggesting using StreamClip to open the file and create the MP4.

You might try to use MPEG Streamclip. It it is a little more flexible with the content it can open and export/encode.

Just another tool to try.

@ PuzZleR I think everyone here appreciates your comments. You seem to know a lot about h.264 and video in general(no I am not being a smart [Censored]). FrontRow does not allow playback of Video_TS folder with running an applescript hack. I have tried it and found it buggy. I have tried MediaCentra...

Why would you want anything bigger than an 8.6 GB movie as that is as big as a DVD-9 will go? Seems pointless to make it bigger than the source... Not pointless - insane more like it. Seriously guys, I can go on and on about the theory behind H.264 and its compression levels. Anything over 70%-80% ...

I did not think my dual G5 was slow already but I guess for encoding it is. My point about the speed was that I have been using HB with many different setting but I have never seen the fps drop to 2-3. I was just making sure there was not something set in the advance settings that might have been ca...

Thank you for your response. I tried what you suggested (floating the mouse over the presets). This gave a little bit more info. I can only ask for what I use handbrake for but maybe some other people have a similar need. Here are the presets I would like to see. There might be some presets that alr...

presets description

I hope this information is not somewhere else ...... Can someone tell me what all the new presets do in the latest build(not the public release but the latest SVN)? There are a lot of new presets. Some are easy to understand what they do but others are not. It would be helpful to know when to use wh...

The only reason I use handbrake is to convert the movies I want to watch into an FrontRow(quicktime) compatible format. I have used Media Central and other work arounds for playing movies easily from my couch(I use a MacMini hooked to a 56" flat screen). Converting the file also allows for easy...

I have a 56" set and have been playing my mp4(264) rips with a Mac Mini hooked up to it over a VGA. I have tried many, many, many different combinations of bit/sec. I have to disagree with a setting of 2000. On the big screen you can see to many artifacts at this setting(IMO). I use a different...

It also would be nice to have handbrake display which task it is currently working on.

I agree with the other request for the queue as well.

I am pretty sure the limit is not related to a bug in Handbrake but a limitation of QuickTime/AppleTV/FrontRow to read a video file larger than 4GB. There also might be a limit in the MP4 spec to GB but I am less sure of that.

I noticed that in addition to the CPU not pegging the fps were about 2/5 as fast (between 5 and 6). I will do more testing. I have a Mac Mini that I will try on the same DVD folder.

I just noticed this on the new verison of Handbrake. The cpu never got above about 60 percent. I am using a dual G5. Mediafork pegs the cpu on the same file(DVD folder).

I think you are right in guessing that your problem is related to deinterlacing. I have notice the same problem on some video when I deinterlace. You might want to try MPEG steamclip's deinterlacer to see if you like those results better.

I would like to agree with jsrun. If I run into a problem with audio cutting out or an incomplete rip I will open the vob files in Streamclip. I then "fix timecode breaks" and then either rip into mp4, or if that does not work, save it as an MPEG. This fixes most the problems I run into. O...

I have ran into this problem. For some reason Handbrake(MF) does not recalcutate the bit rate when you set it to target size until you change some other setting (I always change the file format from MPEG4 to H.264). Once you do this Handbrake(MF) will recalculate the bit rate for your tarket size. T...

You can use a program call MPEG Streamclip that will be able to open the file DVD files. You can then select the screens you want and export them in many different formats that are compatible with almost any DVD authoring program. Just a note. You do not need Mac The Ripper to copy the the DVD's tha...

I agree with the members who are posting their request for the best possible video quality with the file size being a secondary priority. I am surprised at how much this is bothering some people. The truth is you CAN see a difference in quality when you encode at 1500 kpbs with h.264. I usually use ...
