Re: Strange behaviour when setting the quality for AAC (avcodec) in Handbrake

I came here to report the same thing. AAC "quality" encoding seems totally broken. Encode the same video with various different AAC "quality" settings and observe the output file sizes. I don't remember exactly what my results were from my testing last week, but IIRC beyond quality 3 or 4 it's the e...

How is passthrough audio handled in conjunction with video length editing?

If I say "only encode chapters 2 through 5" of a 6 chapter video, then select AC3 passthrough, how does Handbrake handle this? Does it include the full audio track but add a delay? Is there some lossless way of editing only the length of an AC3 file? Or does it automatically fall back to re-encoding...

Re: (SVN5170) Mixdown from DTS-HD MA (6.1 ch) breaks

Well, first, don't resample to 32 kHz. Leave it on "auto". Then, increase the bitrate or use another encoder. The very minimum for AC3 5.1 is 320 Kbps (448 Kbps or more is recommended). Maybe this has already been fixed in the aforementioned patch, but I've been encoding my MakeMKV ripped Blu-Ray c...

Re: possibly a new AAC encoder??? (for windows)

OP, if optimal quality:filesize is very important then I suggest extracting the original audio track, encoding it with an external program, then muxing it with Handbrake's video using mkvmerge (part of mkvtoolnix). I do this sometimes when I'm encoding for my phone or for long-term archival. This wi...

Completely ignore that post, the settings make me sick to look at. They make no sense at all, please just ignore them and find a proper guide somewhere. Also, this thread is 6 years old, not the best place to look for encoding advice.

Re: OpenCL Nightly Builds

Aha, my mistake. I actually just watched the movie for the first time right after I posted my message and I came back here to hopefully ninja-edit before I looked like an idiot. I'd left my rip of the movie encoding overnight and my disappointment at the bad encode this morning was my only frame of ...

Re: OpenCL Nightly Builds

Yes, the cropping issue is something I've seen a few times with regular HandBrake. A readily-available example is The Dark Knight Rises, which has the Warner Bros logo, Legendary Pictures logo, DC Comics logo, Syncopy logo, and the very first scene all in 2.4 aspect ratio, while the rest of the movi...

Hi, I'm just a user like you but I can answer your question. First, this isn't the board for feature requests. You can find that here: https://forum.handbrake.fr/viewforum.php?f=26 Second, the HandBrake devs are *extremely* touchy about the issue of device profiles since they're asked so often. The ...

I don't know, but my PC doesn't seem to. When I've tried encoding a "large file size" MP4, neither VLC or CCCP w/ MPC-HC can play it. Maybe something just went wrong.

Fun, fun. Results of a ~3 hour encode:

(I know I can just use MKV, I'm using MP4 for compatibility reasons)

Does HandBrake do the video resizing or x264?

Does HandBrake resize the source video (when asked to) prior to it being handed off to x264, or does x264 resize the video itself? If x264 does resize the video itself rather than an internal HandBrake filter, at what stage of its processing does it do this? I ask because it seems relevant to the mo...

Re: Safe to always use Dolby Pro Logic II, even for stereo?

PL II is not used for Digital Surround (5.1) output, nor does it encode existing discrete Rear/LFE channels for later use. If you're right, someone needs to do some wiki editing: Wikipedia entry on Dolby Pro Logic : Dolby Pro Logic Dolby Surround/Pro Logic is based on basic matrix technology. When ...

Allow "dumb" subtitle passthru

I tend to have two primary uses for HandBrake: 1) I just backed up one of my new DVDs or Blu-rays with MakeMKV and now I've got this 30+ GB file that's impractical for any normal use, like to use on my phone or to stream with my home media server. So I convert it down to 720p with sensible settings ...

Safe to always use Dolby Pro Logic II, even for stereo?

The way I understand DPLII, it acts sort of like joint-stereo MP3 encoding, where a portion of one audio channel is used to create another channel. This is why it's detected as stereo when it is actually specially-encoded 5.1. But if there's no rear channels to mix in and LFE isn't currently working...

Display total encode time in Encode Queue window

In the Encode Queue window, where it says "Job Status", "Source", etc, a field that says "Encode Time" or something similar would be tremendously helpful in judging whether a given quality setting was "worth it" after the encoding has finished. Right now I'm encoding the same video with various sett...

slow-firstpass

I'm doing a lot of experimenting with different built-in settings and in the course or learning I came across a thread where someone recommended using the x264 parameter "--slow-firstpass" to (among other things) help reduce banding. Sorry if these are dumb questions: - I thought that CRF was single...

What version of x264 is used in 0.9.6?

Hi, I've been reading guides here and there on how to make good encodes, but they often refer to specific x264 builds or say "this version or above", etc. I noticed in a 0.9.6-encoded video that the "writing library" says x264 core 120, but I don't know how this translates into an "rXXXX" type of nu...
