Re: Converting MKV to MP4 with no re-encode
There is a piece of free software called Avidemux that MIGHT be what you want. I originally looked at it for dealing with passing through video and including soft-subtitles, but once i realized it could only deal it with hard subtitles, I quit looking at, though i kept the software because it has a ...

Re: Can anybody recomend software for subtitles?
Thanks. I'll look those up. Is there any sort of user guide for avcov/ffmpeg? Command lines are useless if you don't know what to command.

Re: Can anybody recomend software for subtitles?
Actually already found that one. Poked through the menu fairly well. All that seems to do is allow you to mess with the Meta-Data and chapter marks and names. Certainly useful, I will be keeping that software, but it doesn't touch upon subtitles. F.Y.I., I've also discovered AVIdemux. Looks like a f...

CPU speeds against encode times.
I've been curious for a while now if my computer is performing encodes significantly slower due to it's age, or if it's still managing to hold it's own more or less. I was wondering if people would be willing to report the amount of RAM in and the CPU speed of their computers, and how long it takes ...

Re: Can anybody recomend software for subtitles?
MP4. I found a bit of software that should by able to turn vobsub subtitles from a DVD to a .srt file via and OCR. (Sheesh. I'm getting as bad as the government with their alphabet soup. Haven't played with it yet, but assuming it works, it would be nice to append subtitles to my existing files inst...

Question about the loss of quality in multiple encodes.
Hi. This question is out of pure curiosity. There are no practical application I can think of. I understand that the x.264 encoder is "lossy", meaning the resultant output file will be of less quality than the input. If I were to then take that resultant video file and run it through handb...

Can anybody recomend software for subtitles?
Hi. I noticed one thing I can't do with handbrake is add in soft subtitles with out doing another encode of the file. Can anybody recommend a piece of software to add in an .srt subtitle file to an existing video file while otherwise leaving the video and audio streams alone? I'm running Windows XP ...

Recomendations for HB setting for later audio ripping
Hi. If my sole purpose in doing a encode was for producing a file for extracting the AC3 (Passthough) audio stream out of and I didn't care one iota about the video stream, what settings would you recommend for a high speed encode? For example, I know the the higher the RF, the heavier the compressi...

Recomondations for an .mkv (de)muxer?
Hi. I'm not sure I'm using the right terminology, so please bear with me. I recently found the piece of software for .mp4/.m4v files that allows me to to mix and match audio, visual, and subtitle tracks without having to run an encode. I believe this type of software is called a muxer? Is that the c...

Subtitles and PlayStation 3
When ever I put a video file created by handbrake on my PlayStation 3, I can't get it the subtitles to work. Is this a shortcoming of the PS3, a feature not yet installed in handbrake, or am I missing something like a "Click here to make subtitles work on the PS3" button? This seems to hap...

Re: .m4v vs. .mp4
Just to be clear, how players react to it may be different, but the files themselves would be identical. In theory, I should be able to change the extension back and forth with impunity, right?

.m4v vs. .mp4
I know that some media players prefer the .m4v extension (apple iPad for example) and some media players like the .mp4 extension. In the file itself, is there any difference between the two? For example, I encode a video using the .m4v extension. I then run the same encode use the same exact setting...

Thank you for the help.
The only thing I know about color Rec 609 and Rec 709 is that they result in rec'ed human brain. (Sorry, couldn't help myself with the pun.)

Re: General Info Request: HD vrs SD
So, from the perspective of the handbrake software and not considering interlace versus progressive, the only things that distinguish HD from SD are the choices under the Picture tab, regarding the resolution?

General Info Request: HD vrs SD
When looking to do a 1:1 encode, I usually use the Regular --> high profile, and the only thing I change is anamorphic loose to anamorphic strict. This has worked absolutely perfectly for me to date. If I actually wanted to take a HD progressive video file and downscale it to SD interlace, or if I w...

General Info Request: UTF8 Subtitles in Handbrake
Hi. Basic question: I'm getting ready to run an file through handbrake using h.264/.mv4, and when I get to the subtitle section, the subtitle format is labeled as UTF8. Can I leave these as "soft" subtitles, or do I need to select the burn in option? For example, when using VOBSUB subtitle...

Re: Maintaing or upscaling to HD
And I quote: I'm asking this question more out of curiosity then anything I actually intend to do. Thanks It's less about wanting to do it, and more about understanding what the heck I'm doing. For the algebraically inclined, my desire to know parallels the idea of wanting to confirm if a + b = c, t...

Maintaing or upscaling to HD
Hi. Could somebody verify the following? I'm asking this question more out of curiosity then anything I actually intend to do. Assume I have a 480i source material (I think that's what qualifies as "Standard" definition, what commercial DVD's play at if the film has a 4:3 Aspect ratio). Le...

Re: Seeking dbl check: Encoding for 320 x 240 display
Should I leave the "Keep Aspect Ratio" box checked, and let the Height be defined by the modulus choice, or should I manually redefine height as well? If I should let the modulus define height, what Modulus do you recommend? (At modulus 16, height scales to 176, at modulus 8, height scales...

Encoding for 320 x 240 display: Part 2
I'm not trying to jump the queue of people waiting there turn to get answers to their question. I only changed the subject line of this thread to make sure it was realized that I wished to re-enter the queue.
