Re: Any advantage to HEVC for Blu-ray?

Thanks for that. I think my "understanding" (i.e. "what I'd heard") about HEVC must have been mainly related to file sizes, with H.265 making 4K files more manageable than H.264. But since I'll be relying on presets maybe I should stick with H.264 for now, with its more established (and device-optim...

Re: Any advantage to HEVC for Blu-ray?

Ah right, gotcha. If efficiency is the only difference I guess it's down to how much space vs. time I'm willing to sacrifice.

Support isn't an issue as I'm an Apple guy and the various OS's (and iTunes/Apple TV) are about to support it.

Thanks for the advice!

Any advantage to HEVC for Blu-ray?

Hi, I understand HEVC is the optimum encoding for 4K sources, but is there any advantage to using it for 1080p Blu-ray? Or is H.264 sufficient?

Re: using apple tv 2 preset for iPad movies?

Thanks for that. Any thoughts on whether Apple TV 2 preset offers a dramatic quality advantage over Universal?

Or is there a need for a new Universal preset for iPhone 4 and above?

Re: using apple tv 2 preset for iPad movies?

Further to this, would the Apple TV 2 preset also be okay for iPhone 4, since it can record/play HD video? I've ripped a bunch of DVDs in Universal format and am now wondering if I should go back and re-rip in Apple TV 2, since I'll probably never watch them on anything less than an iPhone 4. Or wil...

Re: Alternatives to HandBrake for Blu-ray

Thanks for the additional input folks! Maybe the Mac way isn't too complicated after all (and I'd like to avoid Windows as much as possible) This muxes into an mkv file that has subtitles and audio that will play in VLC. I actually want it to play on an unhacked Apple TV, so I might have to stick wi...

Re: Alternatives to HandBrake for Blu-ray

Yeah, I'm increasing coming to the realization that Windows may be the way to go (though in dual-boot rather than VM).

Thanks again!

Re: Alternatives to HandBrake for Blu-ray

Thanks for that, just noticed Mac Blu-Ray Ripper Pro wasn't a "one-stop shop" after I posted. Do you have a particular preference between that and MakeMKV?

Alternatives to HandBrake for Blu-ray

I'm not sure if I can wait until HandBrake gains all-in-one decryption/conversion abilities for ripping Blu-ray discs to Apple format, so I've been looking around at commercial alternatives such as Pavtube Blu-ray Ripper for Mac and Mac BlurayRipper Pro . Can anyone recommend these or others? I just...

Re: Bluray Ripping & Encoding (A Total Mac Solution)

Pardon my ignorance, but if MakeMKV can decrypt Blu-ray on a Mac, does that mean HandBrake may eventually gain the capability? I'd like BD ripping to be as simple as DVD.

Re: New $99 AppleTV finally plays 720p @ 30fps

When it comes to presets for devices that don't support certain features (e.g. the old Apple TV, iPod Classic) the main function of the preset is to ensure that the settings don't exceed those. For devices that support pretty much everything, like the iPad onwards, you don't need a preset specifica...

Re: New $99 AppleTV finally plays 720p @ 30fps

Question for the devs: Do you know if the AppleTV and/or Universal presets will be updated for the new model?
