Re: handbrake encoding quality

I always noticed the quality loss with DVDShrink on movies that were large enough to fill a dual layer DVD. Keep in mind DVDShink doesn't always compress if the movie can already fit on a single layer DVD. I use this for my DVDs: RF: 20 (I like a little more compression, 19 would be better for quali...

[svn5838]Crash on opening a file

Been a while since I have used HB. The official release works fine, but lacks the advanced options I like. The latest svn crashes as soon as I add a file or folder. The folder was created with DVDFab and the file was an MKV from MakeMKV.

Any ideas? Currently running Windows 8.

If you have a Mac then try MP4Tools.

I unfortunately don't know of a Windows based program other than the one you listed.

Re: HELP! How to convert without quality loss for Apple TV

I'll let more knowledgeable folks chime on why you're getting freezes. But to answer your main question, keep it simple and just select the Apple TV3 preset on the latest Handbrake build. iTunes won't import .mkv's, nor will ATV 3 play them, so the default format is mp4 (.m4v file). I'm not 100% su...

Re: BluRay, Ripping, and bears... oh my

Season 1 of BSG is 1080P VC-1, where as Season 2 is AVC MPEG-4. That is probably what is tripping up Freemake (I have never used Freemake before). HB should have no issue with either though. Lots of things can cause stuttering. You PC could even be choking on a high bitrate. Need some more info (set...

Re: VC-1 Interlaced Video - Lesser of all evils

Why use RipBot at all? You can point HB at the AnyDVD rip and pick your title from there. You are encoding twice for no reason.

Also skip the decomb and detelecine for a BR source. If HB has trouble deinterlacing then turn the deinterlace setting to fast and try it again.

Re: Crashing on some MKVs made from BRs

I use MakeMKV to do my backups. I like it the best since it only grabs the video and puts into an easily playable file if I don't feel like re-encoding right away. Much easier for the wife to deal with than an ISO or folder style backup. At any rate a remux fixed it. The files played fine before the...

Crashing on some MKVs made from BRs

I have had this happen with Cloverfield and The Muppets right around 24% done. Both were made with MakeMKV 1.7.4. Re: What should i downmix DTS to?

FYI AC3 @ 640kbps (the highest HB supports for AC3 using 6-channel) is pretty much DVD quality sound. It is about a quarter the bitrate of a DTS-HD lossless track. Just something to keep in mind (I convert all my lossless audio to that to save space).

Re: Question about audio settings

AAC is a newer format than AC3. But the encoder in HB for AAC isn't the best, so at the same bitrate AC3 sounds slightly better (that is why AAC has an extra bitrate option that is higher than the max for AC3). Also because AC3 is a little older, it tends to have more support in devices. I used AAC ...

Re: Max Optimal Bluray Settings without going overboard

Also using maxrate and bufsize on an encode with a constant bitrate seems useless unless you need a large buffer for some reason. I assume you mean average bitrate. And no, it's not useless - if you want to limit the bitrate peaks, you have to use VBV, regardless of the chosen rate control method. ...

Re: Limiting Max Bitrate for High Profile, Constant Quality

The ATV3 is technically only L4.0 compliant. Though I have heard reports of it being able to handle higher. To keep your video in ATV3 spec, you would have to use 25000 as your limit. Now if you are using BRs as your source you should at least have a limit of 40000 because that is the max bitrate of...

Re: Max Optimal Bluray Settings without going overboard

Why not use CQ? Also using maxrate and bufsize on an encode with a constant bitrate seems useless unless you need a large buffer for some reason. Those settings are going to yield very long encode times. I use something like this (CQ 21): b-adapt=2:rc-lookahead=60:ref=4:bframes=6:me=umh:vbv-bufsize=...

What kind of encode times are you usually experiencing? What's an average FPS for film and animation? -IP I have a old C2D E6300 @ 2.4ghz overclocked, so my encode times are not very good. They are somewhere in the range of 14-22 hours. A buddy of mine had a first gen i7 and he encoded The Fifth El...

Re: Optimal PC Hardware for Handbrake conversions

I have played around with encoding using a VM on VMware ESXi 5.0. It was nowhere near as fast as a comparable physical box. The way ESXi handles the CPU scheduling just does not play well with encoding. Stick to a physical box with no more than 8 threads (unless you want to run multiple instances on...

Re: *** AppleTV 3 and the New iPad (Presets) ***

What video size settings are people using for Blurays? I've always set anamorphic to "none" and manually set all cropping to 0 and the resolution to 1920x1080 (keep aspect ratio ticked). It usually tries to make it 1920x1088 but I simply change that to 1080. Is this the ideal setting for ...

Then Flac would not work for me. I want to play movies using my Aios media player connected to my tv. You may be ok. It looks like that media center does support FLAC audio. It should be at the bottom left of the HB window. HB does minimize to the tray so you may need to click the little HB icon to bring the window up.

Re: *** AppleTV 3 and the New iPad (Presets) ***

So, I encoded a couple of files using "High" today. The results look beautiful, but the files are HUGE! I was fooling with "dodgeball", starting with a BD rip. "High" left alone made a 9.88 gb file "High" with "large file size" unchecked made a 8.55...
