Re: how to edit x264 mp4 video
Mpeg streamclip will work too - also lossless if cut at an I frame.

Re: apple tv not filling screen
why would you want to do this? Because 720x576 can equally be 4:3 or 16:9. Sometimes the movie doesn't carry information as to which aspect ratio should be used (e.g. my old Sky satellite box outputs both indiscriminately) and one has to adjust the aspect ratio from the TV remote, as nicpec found. ...

If the video was intended to be 4:3, stretching it to 16:9 will distort the image.

Re: Anamorphic question
With the current release and an NTSC source, Handbrake actually does the opposite. Anamorphic on will scale 4:3 material to 640x, so for 4:3 letterboxed material I'd switch anamorphic off. well with anamorphic on, 4:3 ntsc content with storage size 720x480 will be displayed at 640x480 (and for OP, ...

Re: Anamorphic question
If you turn anamorphic off, your width will be scaled to 640 (-crop). Handbrake won't let you put it back to 720. Why? I suppose because to keep correct aspect the height would need to be artificially up-scaled to match, and thats not cool in the Handbrake philosophy. So, personally, I'd leave anamo...

Re: EEDI2 Port
Okay I have a shiny new patched svn! The the picture setting is something I'm definitely curious to experiment with. In the past, (Dynaflash?) created a preference (at my request I believe) where you could enter the decomb parameters when using the GUI. I can't see such a preference any longer, nor ...

Re: Optimal settings for Archos 5
Maybe I should be asking Archos to support VFR. I asked Archos support for this six or seven months ago. They replied that they would look into it, but so far ... nothing. Too bad I didn't see this thread until today, I went through all this a long time ago and came up with the same conclusion that...

Re: Newbie DVD to AVI
I have an Archos 705 WiFi It was a couple months back that I did my experimentation (so I can't remember all the details) It can play video in mp4 container with xvid, generic mpeg4 video and x264 video if you install the podcast plugin. However HB's variable framerate really throws it for a loop if...

Re: SVN1477 (and 1457): Changes to H264 options/header info?
This is actually a result of a bug report you filed, about missing frames in the Sopranos. Frames were missing/duped because the synchronization code forced frame durations to have a constant length. When this diverged enough from the audio, frames would be copied or discarded to bring the timecode...

Re: SVN1477 (and 1457): Changes to H264 options/header info?
Does 0.9.2 let you skip ahead if you use VFR? It appears the answer is NO, I encoded the same title with HB 0.9.2, iPod Hi-Rez + VFR (and detelecine). The resulting video plays smoothly on the Archos , but gives the same error if I try to fast forward. The menu preview also doesn't work. In my HB s...

Re: SVN1477 (and 1457): Changes to H264 options/header info?
I realise HB developers don't support the subversions, but users are allowed to post feedback on snapshots. I've run into the same issue with the Archos 705, and I am providing activity logs for reference. Here I encoded 2 chapters of a TV title (with a mix of hard-telecined and soft-telecined conte...

Re: H264 Baseline?
I just bought the Archos 705 and am have found the same issue. This is using HB svn 1495. So far in my experimentation, these advanced options play, but no fast forward: level=30:bframes=0:ref=1:analyse=all:me=umh:subq=6:no-fast-pskip=1:merange=16 anamorphic is off, and detelecine+vfr+decomb are on....

Re: Adjust picture colour before encoding
okay, thanks for considering it. even then I'd only hook it up in the CLI. I do think if any feature ever needed a graphical interface, this is it. Adjustments like this need to be seen (and in more than one frame), because for the most part, they need to be done by eye, not calculated values. Until...

Re: Enter Picture Dimensions via keyboard in the GUI
okay, I opened the .plist file using PlistEdit Pro. I see I can change the presets to anything I want like you say. I don't want to edit presets. I want to manually enter picture size and crop in the picture settings dialog, on a source by source basis. For cropping anyways, it doesn't make sense to...

Re: Half-height picture by dropping a field
Yes, I guess thats true, especially if the thrown away lines contain important detail (albeit from a different time). This is a bad idea. It's extraordinarily wasteful in terms of available spatial resolution in frames with low motion

Re: Half-height picture by dropping a field
Thanks Rodney. You also have the nasty 'stairstep' effect on straight lines I just want to clarify something if I wasn't clear - I want the resulting image to be 1/2 the vertical resolution, and 1/2 the horizontal resolution. So the picture is 1/4 the original size (in area). The way I picture it, t...

Half-height picture by dropping a field
As long as we're asking for ponies ... I'd like to be able to take a 1920x1080 source, drop half the vertical resolution to become 1920x540 by dropping even or odd lines, then scale the image to 960x540. I believe this would remove any need for de-interlacing, and leave a comb-free frame. My only co...

Adjust picture colour before encoding
This is very likely difficult to implement within HB's current preview model but... I'd like to be able to colour-correct the picture's colour before encoding. A hue/saturation/brightness + gamma filter would do it for me. This would be helpful to remove colour casts and pump up colour from poor sou...
