Re: Overwrite Destination
Handbrake does warn you that you’re about to overwrite a file with the same name. And it gives you the option to continue or cancel.

Re: 1080p vs 480p
1080p preset doesn’t try to maintain as much detail. It doesn't upscale to 1080p, it’s just tuned for 1080p material. As your resolution goes down, the flaws from compression artifacts become more noticeable. The 480p presets are designed to maintain more detail over all therefore a higher bit rate....

Re: shimmer/flicker effect
I don’t want to get too technical here, but it goes back to the history of analog video. The creators of the original TVs wanted a smooth 60 frame per second look and a high resolution. But there was only enough bandwidth for one or the other. So a compromise was made, interlaced video. Basically ea...

Re: shimmer/flicker effect
Yes, it is possible for DVD to have interlace and non-interlace material in one video. if you don’t see interlace lines with the filter turned off, then that portion of the video would be “ progressive”, And won’t need to be deinterlaced. I use quotes because DVDs is by their nature are interlaced. ...

Re: shimmer/flicker effect
Can you get a screen shot of a couple frames, back to back, to show what’s going on? I’m assuming either an interlaced image not being deinterlaced, a non interlaced image that’s incorrectly being deinterlaced, or compression artifacts. Or a combination of all 3. Also use a proper default for a DVD....

Re: How to skip bad spot on dvd
You can try makemkv and see if it can get you a rip to work with. Or worse case scenario, set the end encode time to right before the bad section, and then another with a start point right after the bad part. then you can stitch them together in something like MKV merge

Re: Converting MP4 to AVC?
MP4 is a container and not a format. AVC is just another name for h.264, which can be put into a mp4 container. As for your question, yes handbrake can encode avc/h.264. It’s the default codec.

Re: Unable to transfer from Mac to iPad in wrong size
Apple is specific on what settings need to set to import a video using its default system. It’s pretty lenient but if you have a wrong setting it just won’t work. VLC is like a Swiss Army knife. I’ll try to use apples playback system in the background, but if not, it has drivers for several other di...

Re: Unable to transfer from Mac to iPad in wrong size
Not sure. Maybe the setting you have. Maybe just try one of the Apple device presets. Hopefully someone knows more about what Apple considers a proper formatted file for iOS. But back to what I was saying. If you get VLC for your iPad, there is no need to use the music app to transfer videos. You ca...

Re: Unable to transfer from Mac to iPad in wrong size
Forget about using apples built in video player. I haven’t used it in over a decade. Download the VLC app and you can copy files to the VLC folder. VLC a little bit more for giving on the type of formats that it can play.

Re: Unable to transfer from Mac to iPad in wrong size
The current size is the amount of pixels that quick time is using on your computer screen to play the video. It’s not something that is encoded into the video. Change the window size and the current size will change.
Re: Ripping
Handbrake cannot read commercial DVDs. Try makemkv, then you can run that file through handbrake to convert.

We are talking 2 pixels wide. Possible that you wouldn’t even notice if there were a black bar there. I bet if you pixel peep, it would be there.

Re: interlace x265 -- possible?
Umm... I think I figured out the use of the word "interlaced". Tell me what you think, eh? Interlaced doesn't mean a video is interlaced on disc. It means it is submitted to an interlacing process during decode and therefore the decoded pictures are 'interlaced'. In other words, "int...

“Same as source” will properly output to 60fps when deinterlacing with decomb Bob.

Re: Going for 24/1.001 judders/second -- How?
The easy way to do this and not lose frames is turn on detelecine, set frame rate same as source, and decomb bob on. That will take the 24FPS stuff and make it 24. It will even fix the weird cadence. If it was edited on tape, some transitions and titles may run at 60 interlaced overlayed over the 24...

Re: Going for 24/1.001 judders/second -- How?
It may be a movie shot on film, telecined to video, and edited from there. It would throw off the 3:2 cadence at every cut. Ive seen it before. Use detecine to extract to 24fps.

Re: Audio Help ?
They are just different audio compression formats. Like aac vs mp3. Some may perform better at lower bit rates than others, but at that high of bit rate, they would be virtually identical to your ears. But the difference in sound you may be hearing from the 5.1 and 7.1 is difference in the mix. A 7....

Re: Newbie struggling to convert Mov files on mac
I’m going off on a limb here, but I remember back in the day when iMovie would share a movie with iDVD, it would just send a reference .mov file that actually doesn’t contain any video information, but links back to the original iMovie edit and files. It’s possible that there’s nothing in those vide...

Re: mp4 to mp4 conversion problem
Seems handbrake is having issues with the audio channel. It doesn’t know what it is and is failing to decode it or their is an error in it. It looks like it’s mp2 (odd format for a .mp4 file). One option is try and Remux into a mkv file because it’s more fluid with odd mixtures of audio and video. Y...

Re: AVI format
AVI is a container, not a format. But I’m assuming you’re talking about old movies with mpeg4 video with mp3 audio that was known as divx. And most dvd players can not play it. You must have an old one that does. But It’s not a standard feature. There are several players that can play many formats o...

Re: Combine titles from dvd to 1 mp4 file
Im assuming each "chapter" is actually its own title. dont know without logs. but if so rip the dvd titles as mkvs with mkv merge. Then run mkktoolnix and merge them as one mkv. Then run that file through handbrake.

It could be that the DVDS are old and are failing. doenst mean no dvd player can read the data. It's possible your dvd drive you have may have trouble reading them. Try another dvd drive.
