Re: iPhone can now use Apple TV Preset

QuickTime is fine for me? Maybe the gpu playback isn't affected by the same issues? Or I have low standards.

Anyone have some suggestions for legal HD source material, and/or settings to test it with? Realise iTunes won't sync it, but I'm sure it'll play from doc sharing apps.

Re: iPhone can now use Apple TV Preset

Did a few tests with a friend's 3GS (the swine). Hardly exhaustive, but maybe it'll help. Test scene was chapter 18 of the PAL Spiderman DVD, a relatively high-motion scene. Started from the AppleTV preset (so it's anamorphic SD) in his Hanbrake (svn2773) and bumped a few things up. Basically, CABAC...

Re: dark h.264 video (only in mp4 container)

Hi guys, I've been hiding. Sorry, but I'm definitely noticing this again too. With 0.9.3, the colour is now pretty indistinguishable with/sans Perian 1.1.2; but it's consistently darker than when VLC plays the same encode. Btw, VLC's colour matches the DVD as played in DVD Player or VLC. I guess thi...

Bear in mind that "h.264" is no one thing - there are many technologies involved, and it's still called h.264 whether it's as simple or as complicated as possible. You'll need to find out exactly what your player supports.

I doubt that anything on the iPhone makes the volume rules different for self-rips. What's more likely is that it's now more noticeable that HB rips are quieter than your other content. Quiet sound is a known factor with HB's output. It doesn't help that iTunes doesn't really do Sound Check for movi...

I would be immensely surprised if any vaguely modern movie required deinterlacing. The passage you quoted warns against exactly what you seem to be doing - always deinterlacing, no matter what the source - and so also contains the solution to your problem. If there is interlaced material you need to...

Ha, fair enough. I take it there was no crash log if HB just hung? I know I've ripped all the LotR extended editions in the past, but that was likely with 0.8.5 and the PAL versions anyway.

Did MTR report any problems when it ripped the disc? And did you use 2.6.6 or a 3.0 r14 beta?

Oh, bugger. Sorry, totally misread your post - thought you said the movie was truncated by 30 seconds. Sorry for being a git. If you're happy with the resulting encode then that's fine - MF is getting rather ancient now so I wouldn't recommend using it on a regular basis though. FYI, best practice i...

HandBrake has a known issue which results in slight movie truncation sometimes. A little searching could have thrown that up - as well as this thread on how to rip 2-disc movies.

Oh, huh. former windows user. Ignore me, I just can't read. It's been a long day! It'll be in the Mac GUI for 0.9.1, but it's not there in 0.9.0.

Sorry about that. :D

Ok, I'll try to demystify that a bit. It's been a while since I used the Win GUI - but the screenshot on this page shows that the query editor is realised as a tab in the window. The GUI actually generates a long text string - the "query" - which is sent to the HandBrake command line inter...

Ok, a slight backtrack on that statement - and some good news, too. The GUI may or may not gain a graphical option for this, as there are other things happening right now. I spoke too soon. However - it will certainly be possible, you'll just have to use the query editor. The CLI option for it stand...

You perhaps used the old - freely available - version of MacTheRipper, which will likely also choke on the copy protection of new DVDs.

Well, you'd get a marginally clearer picture on the device - but the real bonus would be that the rips would look better for watching on the computer, too. The safest - and most storage-friendly - way to encode would indeed be without anamorphic, though.

There's no point upscaling. Anamorphic doesn't do that - as I'm sure you realise - the width really is 720px, it just displays wider to match the increased vertical resolution. You'll have to wait till you get your player to see if it supports anamorphic content, I suppose. If not, simply encoding a...

Did you rip the film separately from HB? (ie. did you use MacTheRipper, or equivalent?) I have noticed issues similar to this on a copy-protected DVD, and setting HB to encode from a decrypted folder could solve it.

I dont really know the difference between this one and the older versions so i dont know what the new versions have. Sounds like you may as well downgrade for now, then. Or wait for 0.9.1, if there's nothing you urgently need to rip. willzone1: Don't worry. And yes, deinterlacing is much better in ...

If you have problems like this, you must post all your settings . There is absolutely zero chance of your problem getting solved without a complete rundown of how you're setting up HB. And no, saying "I followed some instructions I found" is not good enough. Literally 99.99% of the time an...
