Re: HB & T2 chip

@hanumag: Have you tried Handbrake with your new MacMini? Yessir. I have only used the VideoToolBox encoder option to test. As stated by several posters already, the VTB encoder is fast but is it limited in options (bitrate only, limited to 1-pass). Honestly, if you're looking to churn out quick en...

Re: HB & T2 chip

Can you run this small cli app https://subler.org/downloads/VideoToolboxTest.zip and paste the output here? It will list the available VideoToolbox encoders and decoders. HB & T2 chip

Any idea yet how likely it will be for HandBrake to access the T2 chips on the recently released Macs? I am thinking about a Mac Mini as a low-cost, dedicated HEVC encoding/iTunes library station so I can free up my laptop. Was wondering if upgrading to the 6-core version would be worth it or, if T2...

Re: Expectations/guidance on encoding for AppleTV 4K

HandBrake can't produce HDR output, so "faking" it is kind of pointless. Thanks for the reply, s55, but the encoded test clip is seen by my AppleTV as 4K and HDR (as mentioned), where as with other non-HDR 4K sources , these same steps -- including the additional options -- result in a file that is...

Re: Expectations/guidance on encoding for AppleTV 4K

Thanks to some updates in the last few weeks with HB (updating x265 to include 10-bit, in particular), it seems that the preservation of HDR information is now possible. HB-produced 4K HDR clip for download (~48.6 MB M4V file, per MacOS 10.13). It has only gone thru Subler (1.4.3) to tag the Media K...

Re: Expectations/guidance on encoding for AppleTV 4K

Honestly, if UHD+HDR is your thing, then HandBrake isn't your thing. Sure, it can output 2160P 10-bit HEVC using conventional gamma curves, but it cannot handle even the current ST2084 transfer, nor ST2086 HDR static metadata, let alone any of the numerous dynamic standards that will be supported b...

Re: Expectations/guidance on encoding for AppleTV 4K

Yes, any HDR is lost going through HB's pipeline. Yes even with 10 bit input. Yes even with extra libraries for 10 bit encoding. Upsize the ATV preset and adjust the RF a few points. Thanks mduell. Just so I'm not misunderstanding, that would be adjusting the RF up (as in from 22 to 24) since x265 ...

Expectations/guidance on encoding for AppleTV 4K

I'm a long time HB user -- even used it during the MediaFork days  -- and am looking forward to upgrading my ripping hardware & encoding process to 4K eventually. I have a 4K TV already and will be running to the Apple Store to pick up my ATV 4K sometime today. So, my questions related to encod...

Re: 4th Gen Apple TV Mixdown

Have you tried Handbrake's preset called Apple 1080p60 Surround ? It's designed for ATV4 (along with iPad Pro, iPhone 7, etc). http://i.imgur.com/diu3wP9.png I would argue that it's best to follow the preset's defaults as AAC is limited to 320Kbps (on Apple devices), while DD allows up to 640. You w...

Since you missed it: the day iOS 6 was released (Sept 19th), I posted in your earlier thread that this issue has been corrected.

Either that or you don't believe me. lol.

Re: AppleTV 5.1 and SDH

But then with no overscan, you get opposite pb: 2.35 & 2.40 movies from 1080p BR propely HBed [cropped=no black bars] have quite small subtitles :|. They also do not fit in middle of letterbox area, but quite higher. I tried using Subler to correct that by modifying subtitles "scaled size", no luck...

Re: AppleTV 5.1 and SDH

Yeah, #1 & 2 are new to 5.1, for sure. The font size being different for 1.78:1, 1.85:1, 1.66:1 & 1.33:1 files vs 2.35:1 & 2.40:1 frame sizes is something that actually debuted with the ATV 2 in 2010. In fact, the original software version made it a point to place the subs for 2.35 & wider films und...

Re: Mitigating the issue of burning in a subtitle (encoding)

The issue I have is burning in the "Foreign Audio Search" subtitle track, sure I want it to appear by default but I don't want it burnt into the video track i.e. unable to remove/disable. Does anyone have any smart ideas to get around this? Since you're posting this in the Mac forum, I'm hoping you...

Re: How to ensure no black bars?

Well, A Clockwork Orange is a 1.66:1 film. If you leave HB at defaults, the film should display pillarboxed (black bars on the sides) on a 16:9 TV set because the film's ratio isn't as wide (as 1.78:1). If you don't want the pillarboxing: you can either uncheck "Keep Aspect Ratio" in picture setting...

Re: Strange Subtitle Behaviour on iPads with iOS 6

This problem occurs on the following devices: - iPad 2 (iOS 6) - iPad 3 (iOS 6) I'm able to reproduce this on my iPad 3 with iOS 6 but... this happens only when the iPad is in landscape view (which, of course, is how 99.9% of us watch videos). If the iPad is in portrait mode, both lines of subtitle...

Re: How to specify max bitrate?

Tjabo's search reminded me of something.

Back when the ATV3 was first introduced (and HB didn't have a preset for the device yet), Rodeo's advice was to add the following code to the Advanced box:

Code: Select all

vbv-bufsize=31250:vbv-maxrate=25000
Maybe that'll help some?

Re: AAC and AC3 stream shown as a single stream

If i transcode movies with Handbreak containing two audio stream for a single language, than it is shown as two different streams on ATV. The aim is to show this two stream as a Single stream on ATV, like the movies from iTunes. No way to do this in HandBrake. If you're on a Mac, you can do this wi...

Re: Subtitles stuck!

How the SRT file is encoded (the charset) matters some, at least in my experience. For iTunes/Apple Devices it's best practice to encode subs with UTF-8 encoding. (Your log mentions your SRT as being ISO-8859-1 encoded). Try opening your SRT using a subtitle editing app like Jubler , then using the ...

Force SRT Subtitle Track

Greetings HB Team, On the Mac side of things, Subler 0.17 ( read about it here ) has implemented a feature where soft subtitles (from SRT files) can be forced on. I've tested this on a few titles and the results work fabulously well on Macs, iOS devices, and PCs. Would there be any way to implement ...
