That appears to have been the issue! I was correct in my original "layer 8" diagnosis after all. Thanks for your time helping an idiot, LOL.

I'll be goddamned. I unchecked "create chapter markers", and the Incredibles ripped without dropping a second of audio! Thanks for the tip! I wonder why that affects the sound issue at all?
