That appears to have been the issue! I was correct in my original "layer 8" diagnosis after all. Thanks for your time helping an idiot, LOL.

I am attempting to compress some .mp4/AAC videos for use on my Evo 4G, and suddenly it seems HB won't "digest" the .mp4 files. I select the source file, and I get the "No Title(s) found. The File you have chosen may be copy-protected, badly mastered, corrupted, or in an unsupported format, etc." err...

I'll be goddamned. I unchecked "create chapter markers", and the Incredibles ripped without dropping a second of audio! Thanks for the tip! I wonder why that affects the sound issue at all?

In the past, I have used a piece of Windows-only software from Xilisoft called iPod Video Converter.
