Re: Ultimate Profile?

Seeing as there appears to be a distinct lack of interest in this thread and apparent pointlessness in continuing it for the benefit of other HandBrake users. I shall now leave this forum never to return (there was much rejoicing). At least the situation between creamyhorror and myself was appeased ...

Re: Ultimate Profile?

Cheers mate. Thanks for the info. Regarding bframes; I guess I’d need to do lots more testing to find a better answer but maybe it’s worth trusting the x264 developers decision (for the purposes of this topic) that they have only increased bframes in the placebo preset, although they have gone crazy...

Re: Ultimate Profile?

Thanks for the sentiment Statick, I believe it was my bad choice of words and overly verbose posts. But I’m glad you found this thread useful rather than just annoying. Thanks for getting involved creamyhorror and thanks for sharing your preferences. I wasn’t sure whether the hit in speed by increas...

Re: Ultimate Profile?

So I thought I should mention that I’ve updated the description of my suggested profile with the following because some people seem to have the wrong idea about this thread and my intentions: this profile is probably too slow for most people and can in no way be considered 'Ultimate' Either way the ...

Re: Ultimate Profile?

Fair enough, no point in flogging a dead horse. I’ll just give it one more kick for luck: I'm guessing people have already found settings that work for them (I bet most people have their own preferred higher-than-High-Profile profile). Yes, I’m sure a lot of them have. I wanted to start a discussion...

Re: What is the correct frame rate?

So I’d first of all refer you here: http://forum.handbrake.fr/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=14494

Sorry if this doesn’t solve your problem but at least it’s a start (and I'm trying to help).

Re: Ultimate Profile?

So, if you’re looking for a profile that’s higher than the High Profile then the following may help (sorry for mixing the syntax below, although the settings should still be obvious): x264 Defaults: --subme 7 --bframes 3 --weightb --8x8dct --ref 3 --mixed-refs --trellis 1 --crf 23 The HandBrake Hig...

Re: Encodes aren't as smooth as DVD

I guess I’ll end (for me) this thread with some useful information: 1) Read this: http://trac.handbrake.fr/wiki/SupportFAQ#jerk 2) Try disabling detelecine. 3) Some DVDs aren’t authored particularly well, even those released by mainstream studios, so if this is the case, you could try selecting a c...

Re: Encodes aren't as smooth as DVD

Thank you very much for the info Chris. I didn’t know that I should search for anything like “bad transfers to DVD”.

I don’t like my solution of selecting a constant fps. Do you just ignore this kind of stuttering or try to fix it in some way?

Re: Ultimate Profile?

So, in case anyone cares (I’ve repeated info here to save people from having to read this thread)… After encoding 12 random movies (although this does include the two slowest to encode and least compressible I’ve found), with all English audio tracks (passthru) and all English subtitles included (fr...

Re: Ultimate Profile?

That’s kind of a fair point, but not really what I’m saying. ‘Ultimate Profile’ is perhaps a bad choice of words, maybe higher than high or slow would be better. I don’t really care what it’s called, feel free to make suggestions. Also, I started this thread to get other peoples opinions, not just v...

Re: Encodes aren't as smooth as DVD

Thanks for the comment Chris. But seriously, 20th Century Fox, Lionsgate? The stutter is very slight, but because I want to put my DVDs into storage and never take them out again, I’ve been scrutinising the first encodes I’ve completed very carefully so I can be satisfied that I’ve got all my settin...

Re: Encodes aren't as smooth as DVD

Can anyone that knows about authoring DVDs shed any light on this?

I understand that HandBrake is doing what it’s supposed to be doing, but I can’t understand why a DVD would be authored with stuttering built-in?

Re: Ultimate Profile?

Thanks for the reply. The settings provided have been added on top of the High Profile settings and are just a copy of the CLI box at the bottom of the Advanced tab (therefore they include trellis 1). To reiterate slightly but perhaps in a more concise format: I’ve gone for the HandBrake High Profil...

Re: Ultimate Profile?

So after lots of testing with the least compressible movie I’ve found I can suggest an Ultimate Profile (edit: obviously this isn’t actually an Ultimate Profile, just a suggestion with a silly name that seems to annoy some people). Strict anamorphic with RF 18 and the following: b-adapt=2:rc-lookahe...

Re: Ultimate Profile?

I understand the simplicity of the current system and the fact that thing...

Re: Encodes aren't as smooth as DVD

Thanks for the reply. I understand what you’re saying but the consequence of it strikes me as being very strange. Obviously the slow panning across a starry sky is not meant to stutter, nor are the Lionsgate golden cogs. This doesn’t happen on a DVD player so why is the source VFR when an output tha...

Re: Encodes aren't as smooth as DVD

After reading some source code and the change logs, obviously HandBrake should automatically deal with VFR. My previous search had also revealed this, but I’m still not sure whether it has been fully implemented or what the solution to my problem is?

Re: Ultimate Profile?

Thanks again for the info. b-adapt=2 has reduced my fps by as much as 50% Crikey, I didn’t get anything like that reduction in fps. For deblocking, 0,0 is almost always your best bet…The preset you posted uses -1,-1 for film sources, which could be designed to accentuate film grain. That’s what I’ve...

Re: Silence added to middle of music videos for sync?

Sorry for my inaccurate reply. I should have said “I haven’t detected any silence being added to my rips”. But I have just noticed in a recent log that there appeared to be a read error so HandBrake fixed the problem by adding silence. I guess if you've changed the frame rate then HandBrake's trying...

Re: Encodes aren't as smooth as DVD

I still don’t know what to do if I have a VFR source? I’ve tried researching the issue, but I haven’t found a solution yet. I’m not satisfied that I fixed the problem by choosing an exact frame rate because obviously that doesn’t make sense with a VFR source. So can I just ask: Does HandBrake 0.9.4 ...

Re: Ultimate Profile?

Could I go back up to RF 16 with the above because it’d produce a smaller encode?
It doesn't produce a smaller encode with strict anamorphic. It's about 100MB larger than:
a modified version of the High Profile preset: Strict anamorphic, RF 16, UMH, No Fast P Skip and No DCT Decimate

Re: Silence added to middle of music videos for sync?

I just thought I’d reply, but sorry I don’t have a solution. I’ve encoded with passthru AC3 numerous times and I haven’t had any problems with out of sync audio. I’ve only got a problem with VFR and choosing an ‘Ultimate Profile’ (so I’ve deleted all my encodes and I’m waiting for some help). I migh...
