Re: No Luck Including Subtitles on the Mac

You can also use a program like subrip (windows program ie: use bootcamp/virtual pc/parallels/vmware to run it, but this is probably pointless, many srt files can just be downloaded)to turn the vobsubs from the dvd into text (srt) which can be included into an mp4 file as an optional subtitle stream...

Re: Handbrake : normal and high profile

Why: Some kind of compatibility issue between high-profile and the ps3 (a guess)
You can search the devices section of the forum for ps3 settings.

Re: xp pro on 4100 inspiron installation of handbrake

Assuming your .div files play in VLC, handbrake should be able to convert them. I've had no issues with handbrake on my xp pro system before, xp pro is basically the same as xp home. Cost you again? What does that mean? Handbrake costs no money, as for time or something, you mention no problems whic...

Re: Idiot needs help with Audio

It all depends on what audio tracks are present in your source, there is no single answer. Use the preview window to help or get a dvd ripping program with a live preview to help you pick (DVD Fab does this, I'm sure others do as well). AC3/5.1 or DTS/5.1 are almost exclusively the main audio track ...

Re: Any tips for dpl2 mixes?

The Dolby Pro-Logic 2 mixdown is capable of limited 'mixup', while a regular stereo source is not. If you plan on never using it with another device, there is little point including an AAC track and AC3 track in your files, an AAC track I suppose can be muxed in at a later date based on the AC3 trac...

Re: Advice on Presets

2x longer? Yes, that's normal 300mb larger? possibly, high-profile does turn on ac3 pass-through, so if you have a really big ac3 audio file, it can really bump up the resulting video size, however that on its own seems unlikely, unless the video you encoded is just perfectly suited to the settings ...

Re: Handbrake : normal and high profile

high profile turns on more whiz-bangs in x264 which make the encoding take longer, but the file sizes are smaller. High profile videos are less compatible with some portable devices (especially old ones) and low-powered computers/players. Constant quality does what it says ... it keeps the same qual...

Re: Know whether movie has subtitles before encoding?

Uhhh ..... handbrake 0.9.4 supports softsubs in mp4 containers (srt files), those aren't burned in. Good players (VLC) and even quicktime work with them.
You're taking vobsubs I assume? well, those aren't the only kind of subtitle out there.

Re: Audio downsampling...

No, automatic means different things depending on the context of how it is being used. If source is automatic, it picks the primary audio track. If mixdown is automatic, it picks the best mixdown setting for the source.

Re: Srt Char Code?

Srt char code is for telling handbrake what character encoding format the subtitle file (srt) contains the subtitles in. It's probably UTF-16 (aka: UCS-2 Little Endian). I don't know a way of checking what it is encoded in on a mac, maybe opening textedit or something, right clicking on the file and...

Re: convert to play on DVD players

standalone dvd player accepts dvd files (video_ts)
fancier ones might accept mpeg2 (.mpg extension), mpeg1 (looks like crap), divx (.avi, usually more expensive), cda (cd audio, aka: wav files), vcd, svcd and jpeg.

Re: hb fails on encoding at the very start.

Looks like you are trying to rip a copy-protected video.

Handbrake for windows can't do that. You need a program like AnyDVD, DVDFab, etc. to decrypt the dvd first.

Activity log: http://forum.handbrake.fr/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=2741 You highlight (edit->select all), copy(edit->copy), then paste(edit->paste). If you leave it on automatic, it takes the first (or primary) track from the DVD/video input. Mixdown means take a 5.1 audio source and turn it into somet...

Re: New user looking for good DVD conversion settings

Strict encodes the video in the exact resolution as the input source, and does not "pad" it with extra data to make it divisible by 16 (and therefore faster to encode). If this does not matter to you, leave it on loose (the default setting for high profile). You can't throttle the cpu usag...

Re: Large difference in size for encoded movies

Fantasia isn't exactly a simple cartoon or cheaply produced anime. I'd go with weak and see if it gives the result you are looking for, if not bump it up to medium.

I'm not a fan of noise, however I dislike blocking more.

Re: Encoded Movie won't play back with MPC-HC, WILL with VLC

I had noticed that, it has accents in it, subrip saved it in unicode instead of ansi, and when it says unicode, it really means UTF-16.

It kind-of works sometimes.

Thanks.

Encoded Movie won't play back with MPC-HC, WILL with VLC

I encoded LOTR: Two Towers, it won't play back with MPC (it opens, vobsub, fddshow tray icons, haali media splitter all show up in my system tray, mpc shows a black screen, and the timer does not advance. No sound, but CPU usage indicates it's doing something). It plays fine with VLC and Quicktime. ...

Because there may be noise from the original source which was not cleaned up when they made the DVD transfer of it.

Re: Converting to play on desktop DVD players

The only reason to make all your DVDs XVID to play on a standalone DVD player is to put multiple movies onto a single disc. If you want a backup, just rip your discs, shrink them with DVD Rebuilder (freeware), and burn them to DVD-R. Or shell out the dough for the real 1:1 backup solution of DVD+R D...

It took only the first of the episodes because each episode is listed as a separate "title"
So you need to encode each "title" on its own (the queue is useful for this).
