Re: MAC OSX Lion Question
I'm on the regular 0.9.5 release on Lion. And I haven't had an issue yet. It does seem to sap a lot resources while it is running. The Activity Monitor says it using 170% of the CPU. So while it is running the rest of the computer is crazy slow. But I haven't had any actual crashes. That's a featur...

Re: Handbrakes crashed when trying to load Sucker Punch
Handbrake does not appear in my Application Support folder. Is that unusual? BTW...I am using Mac Lion. Are you sure you're looking in ~/Library and not /Library? In Lion, Apple has "helpfully" hidden your user account Library folder from view. To remove this silly little bit of protectio...

Re: Macbook Pro overheating
Simply put, you have some sort of hardware failure/issue and should take it in to Apple to be repaired. Macs are actually widely known for not overheating. Unlike a cheap Acer laptop, they are proper computers with proper cooling systems. I've run encodes on my 15" MBP (and my old 13" MBP)...

Re: Different subtitle, different chapters.
I was ripping my anime DVD today and came across a slight annoyance. I have this pet peeve with watching Japanese anime in dubbed English, so I always have them in Japanese audio with subtitles. The only thing that was annoying as I was transferring today was this: the ending credits, which has a J...

Re: Unable to encode "Source Code" (movie)
Sorry for the late reply, was leaving for vacation right when I posted my original question. So I loaded up the DVD in DVD Player.app and it reported Title 2. Which is odd, because VLC reports Title 31. Anyhow, encoding with Title 2 yields no errors. I'm not sure what crazy copy protection scheme th...

Re: Unable to encode "Source Code" (movie)
Did you check which title to pick manually ( https://forum.handbrake.fr/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=15874 ) or did you just go with what HandBrake selected by default? Title Specific scan, with the title determined by playing the DVD in VLC. Full scan of the DVD was taking a long time, despite it not b...

Unable to encode "Source Code" (movie)
Apologies if this was previously answered -- trying to search for a movie entitled "Source Code" in a forum dedicated to open source (code) software is a recipe for disaster. Anyways, Source Code doesn't seem to play nice with handbrake. I tried this with svn4061 and the latest nightly bui...

iTunes 10.5 beta + AC3 tracks + 64bit = broken
Just as a heads up to others. There is some sort of bug with the iTunes 10.5 beta (running on Lion) with regard to M4V files containing AC3 tracks. They won't import. Disabling the AC3 track in Subler allows the files to import just fine. Solution: exit iTunes, "Get Info" on iTunes.app, fo...

Re: Cannot import to iTunes (despite working before)
Ah sorry, this was a Subler problem. Never had any issues with it in the past, but anything I tag after the upgrade to Lion in Subler won't import. Doing the same with MetaX works just dandy.

Cannot import to iTunes (despite working before)
Update: this seems to be a bug with iTunes 10.5 beta and Lion. See: https://forum.handbrake.fr/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=21710 First encode on my Lion installation and for whatever reason I can't import it into iTunes. Used the same preset as I've used for countless other encodes that have imported j...

Re: "Legacy" Setting in 0.9.5
I am ripping them for my 42" flatscreen TV. That doesn't answer the question -- what device are you using for PLAYBACK. Is this a PC hooked up to your TV, or an AppleTV, or one of any number of devices that can output to TV? If and only if you're using a computer hooked up to the TV, try pasti...

Why in the world would you use the legacy presets? Those are deprecated to support older / less capable devices.
What device (& device generation) are you targeting for playback (computer, Apple TV, iOS device, etc)?

Re: 5-1/2 Hours and nothing
I encode at RF 18.25, which is overkill for most sources but bits are cheap (remember: higher RF values = lower quality. RF 20 is lower quality and smaller file sizes vs RF 18). Even then, my encodes USUALLY are about 1gb per hour encoded. There can be wide variation in that, but it's a decent estim...

There is no maybe. It has improved. Objectively and subjectively. 0.9.3 is old and fails to take advantage of these improvements.eniwetok wrote:But maybe you're right that x264 has improved since v.9.3.

Re: 5-1/2 Hours and nothing
Why two-pass encoding? Use a reasonable RF value and do Constant Quality (DVDs should be in the RF18-22 range).

Are you encoding to an external HDD? If you are, does the problem persist when you encode to your local drive?

Re: Handbrake doesn't keep iMac awake during encode?
Do you have something like PleaseSleep installed? I've never had any issues with the default OS X sleep settings interfering with handbrake. Then again, my MBP also tends to refuse to go asleep regardless of what I'm running, so maybe I'm not the best test case.

Just have a read on other encoder forums about the problems with CUDA & DXVA and you will soon realize that GPU processing is not all that it is cracked up to be. I totally agree with HB that they do not support this kind of processing. It is fraught with problems because of the reliance of the...

be careful with overworking laptops, there just not designed to be worked at full load for long period of times (generally speaking) if you feel you do enough converting than maybe a Desktop pc may well be a good investment. well i mean if you put a 20GB mkv file into it, then leave everything on default under normal preset with say DTS passthru and Target size say 15000MB. i tried this on friends i7 2600 and it was running around 60-70fps on 8 threads I doubt he'd be using Target File Size, as that option is both the ...
