Re: H.265
Edit2: Looks like it is a very long way off being usable. Still think my original estimate of 1 to 2 years down the line before we'll see anything worth using probably isn't too far off the ball. I'm guessing no less than 2 years myself, but it is nice to know that some work has started already :)....

Re: H.265
Well, apparently someone is working on x265 (http://code.google.com/p/x265/). It is far from being near ready though, but it is nice to see that people have already started looking into it. Apparently the developer was involved with x264 (http://cn.linkedin.com/in/chenm003), so this does seem to be ...

Re: Why is DRC 1.0 not default?
The nighties haven't been put into an official "stable" release yet. Regarding DRC, you lose some dynamic range if you apply DRC (even using the hints provided in the file) - you may be able to hear voices better, but it's not optimal for a "home theater" setup. I've got so used...

Re: AVI Files
If you really, really need it you might be able to find a copy of handbrake 0.9.3 on the internet.mcdjhush wrote:I love Handbrake however i would like to be able to convert files/DVD into avi files. Is there likely to be a update for this?

Why is DRC 1.0 not default?
I was browsing the handbrake wiki and was reading the section about DRC. It says that DRC 1.0 will use compression hints that are embedded in the AC3 file, while 0 (the default) doesn't do anything. I was wondering if there is a reason why the presets all (as far as I can tell) use 0 as default, the...

Re: 2011 MacBook Pro 2.3GHz
EDIT: For comparison, here is the same source/presets as encoded by my 3.5 year old machine, using Handbrake svn3841. Normal: 8.591 fps High Profile: 3.555 fps Universal: 26.090 fps Apple TV 2: 9.765 fps That's more or less the same as my 2,5 GHz Macbook Pro from early 2008. I'm doing an encode now...

Re: What happened to the Target Size Option?
If you want to aim for a specific file size you could try using a bitrate calculator such as this one, http://www.3ivx.com/support/calculator/index.html.

Re: [Accepted] PGS (BD subtitles) support
Not trying to bump, just curious why not request PGS passthru instead of converting to another format? Is there a significant downside to putting the PGS/SUP file in an MKV container (which I already do just not with Handbrake obviously) At the moment PGS is not well supported. VLC can display them...

Re: Auto Crop...?
I almost always have this problem when using MakeMKV. As a matter of fact, I think my blu-ray copy of Resident Evil: Extinction is the only blu-ray movie I've run through MakeMKV that doesn't present this problem. I gave up and used the backup disc function in MakeMKV instead and then use Handbrake ...

Re: First 5 sec are grey in Quicktime x
Forgive my ignorance :p, but I thought x264 had qpmin at 10 by default. Has the new builds of x264 changed this value, thereby producing this qt problem?

Re: First 5 sec are grey in Quicktime x
Thanks. Seeing as this is a QT bug, I won't worry anymore about it. I rarely use it. I was just worried this might mean there was something wrong with my files.

First 5 sec are grey in Quicktime x
I just encoded a copy of my dvd Battle of Planet of the Apes. When viewing the file in Quicktime X, the first 5 sec are completely grey, then it starts to break up a bit, and then the actual picture shows up. I'm posting three images here so you can see exactly what I mean. http://www.flickr.com/pho...

Plex now correctly supports anamorphic
I've used Plex for a few months, and while reading the plex blog I was pleasently surprised to see that they now claim that the newest verson of Plex now apparently supports anamorphic mp4 files. http://elan.plexapp.com/2010/10/23/plex-v0-9-1/ According to this blog post plex 0.9.1 should correctly ...

That's what I suspected. I downloaded the 1080p trailer from apples website and sure enough, it wasn't 1080 high, but it was 1920 wide.

Definition of 540p
This question struck me today as I was encoding my newly purchased Batman begins blu-ray. When encoding for my computer, I always encode as 540p as I can't really tell the difference between that and higher when watching on my laptop, which is what these encodes are for. The thing is, the batman fil...

Re: Blu-ray -> New AppleTV: Ripping HW/SW advice needed
Oh, one more thing...you commented about Apple having access to higher quality sources, but if I'm starting with an uncompressed 1080p Blu-ray rip, I would think that should be a pretty good source. ....but still far worse of a source than Apple has access to. Blu-Ray is 420--color planes are half ...

Re: MakeMKV, AnyDVD, Handbrake & AppleTV - a tale of Avatar
I no longer use MakeMKV to create mkv files. They never work well in VLC and Handbrake often has trouble working with them. I've no idea why this is, but I recommend you stick with m2ts files if you are going to use MakeMKV. Incidently, I have noticed that Subler isn't always reliable. A couple of m...

Confused about fps
I've just done an encode of the Blu-Ray copy of Resident Evil: Extinction, and I am extremely confused concerning the fps of the video. I ripped the original BD disk using MakeMKV. VLC tells me that this video has an fps of 23.976. When I load it into handbrake though, handbrake reports it as having...

Re: Soft subtitle pass-through (especially for m4v to m4v)
It sure would be great to have OCR, but not in handbrake. It would be hard to implement into the interface and also make it bloated. OCR tools for Mac certainly would be nice though, as there isn't really any good alternatives at the moment. I used to have windows installed on my Mac purely for doin...

Re: No 5.1 when converting ?
Based on the info we have (mkv with DTS), it is a bit early suspect pirated. After all, if people do blu-ray rips using MakeMKV, which a lot of us are doing, we often end up with mkv files that have dts as many of the new commercial blu-rays don't use True-HD.

Re: Brand New User to ATV, Wants Best Quality
I just did a rip of the Blu-Ray version of Transformers. I chose it because it's one of the few films I have that have True-HD, so I was able to get AC3 passthrough via handbrake. I've spent ages messing around with settings from these forums and trying out my own things. I then noticed that the nig...
