Re: Optimal cores for Apple 2160p60 4K HEVC Surround preset?

@s55 Thanks for that. For future reference, is there a good rule of thumb for memory bandwidth requirements (I.e., something like a multiple of file size per second?), or is it far too complex? I usually source 1080p24 (4-5GB file) or 2180p24 (bigger) with multiple audio tracks, sub tracks, and chap...

Re: Optimal cores for Apple 2160p60 4K HEVC Surround preset?

In case anyone is interested, I am writing to follow-up with my results. Sorry for bringing this thread back after so long; I had a lot going on this spring and didn’t replace the Mac until now. I ended up getting a refurbished iMac Pro (3.2GHz 8-Core Xeon W). I observe the following results with th...

Re: Optimal cores for Apple 2160p60 4K HEVC Surround preset?

All Thanks to each of you for your informed and insightful responses! It appears that 265 does not top out at 22 cores. Good to know! It appears that the rate of fps/core improvement for 265 at 1080p may decrease somewhere between 8 and 16 cores. I am probably looking at a 1080p workflow for the nex...

Optimal cores for Apple 2160p60 4K HEVC Surround preset?

I am shopping for a new Mac. How many physical cores can a single instance of HB utilize with the "Apple 2160p60 4K HEVC Surround" preset? I understand that 264 encoding performance tops out at around 8 cores. I heard 265/HEVC can utilize more, before hitting the point of diminishing retur...

Re: Obscene Handbrake Speeds *g*

Why would you swap is the OS is using the memory as cache? It should convert cache to app memory dynamically as required and only swap if cache approaches zero and you're out of physical free memory. Have you actually seen this swapping occur? Rodney This is what I observed after a fresh reboot and...

Re: Obscene Handbrake Speeds *g*

Thanks for the reply. I guess I meant to ask how much total memory is used when you run HB. I have observed Inactive memory use increases significantly during HandBrake use, until a minimum of Active memory remains. Limited Active memory leads to swapping. I understand this is not HB itself. I suspe...

Re: Obscene Handbrake Speeds *g*

Cyander,

When I finally get my Mac Pro, I want to optimize its configuration for HB. How much RAM is in use while the two encodes are running?

Thank you

Godfather I worked for me after the total bitrate was reduced to about 3000. This reduced the file size below 4GB, and prevented the muxing problem at 100%.

The point is that if you set an ABR and do an encode, then encode again with the same ABR but with no-dct-decimate on, you will have worse quality. But if you set a CRF, and do an encode, and then do another encode at the same CRF but with no-dct-decimate on, you will have the same or better qualit...

jbrjake Sorry for the delay. I've started a new job and haven't had time to look at this for a while. Below is the script I use to employ handbrake. It is a customized version of palmrest. Goals: (1) I tend to use the same settings for every DVD, and wanted the easiest possible way to apply them rep...

If I had the time, I would offer to help you with a title-ripper script (I'd be helping myself out as well), but unfortunately I am swamped. Maybe you could post your solution when you figure it out.

The Godfather is a very long film. HB will have problems if the output file is over 4GB. Try using the setting for "Target File Size" and keep it under 4096MB or a little less to be safe (including whatever bitrate you use for audio).

I have a script running that will auto click on the next title in the title dropdown menu, highlight (but sadly not select) the preset, and add to queue, and then automatically rinse and repeat the process. If you are having a problem automating selections with AppleScript in the GUI. You may wish ...

@sr55 Thanks for confirming the error. I tried AnyDVD with no improvement. Will have to give MTR a go. As this isn't an HB problem, will not take up any more time with this thread. Cheers. @freakent Both may be releated due to copy protection. As I understand it, if the studios released titles to th...

Re: Introducing PalmRest

Finally, it needs any x264 options you so desire. Some of these will not be used in the first pass, to speed it up. I was starting to customize this script for my own workflow, and I noticed that both $TURBO and $X264OPTIONS are included in the first pass command. Was inclusion of the user's $X264O...

Just to check to obvious, is this visible when playing the original DVD?

Maybe it is the result of a poor job transferring the film to DVD (e.g., they didn't clean the film first, lack of post processing, etc.).

Thanks for the pointer; I wasn't aware of MEncoder.

I suppose I need to figure out how to get MEncoder to do 3:2 detection and then perform reverse telecine on those segments.

Hopefully, I can find an existing script for this!

Sources with Mixed Interlaced and Progressive Material

I am trying to work out the best way to covert discs with a mix of interlaced and progressive material (e.g., The Godfather). After transcoding with deinterlacing off (at 24 fps), the interlaced scenes don't look so great. I understand from rhester's comment here: http://handbrake.m0k.org/forum/view...
