Re: Theora fails in 10.0 (works in 9.9)

I have the exact same results. I ran a test using Big Buck Bunny in case you want to reproduce with the exact same file (this one: http://mirrorblender.top-ix.org/peach/bigbuckbunny_movies/big_buck_bunny_480p_stereo.ogg ) I'm running the latest nightly build (svn7124) as of this posting. I know Theo...

Re: VP8, VP9 WebM encoding feature. Theora

Please consider leaving Theora in. I use it exclusively with Handbrake, as it is supported out-of-the-box on any mainstream GNU/Linux distro. VP8 is great, and hopefully will overtake Theora as the default video codec in most distros. But until it does, I'll be using Theora. Handbrake is currently o...

Re: Feature Suggestion: multiple parallel encodes from one q

This would be an amazing feature to have for those of us who encode to Theora (which unlike x264, doesn't seem to scale well at all on multiple cores). I have a six core i7 machine, and encoding to Theora only maxes out one core, and uses a small amount of the others...

Re: FEATURE REQ: Include Audio Track ID in Preset

I disagree with the original poster's request and attitude, but he/she did inspire in me a related idea: what about saving audio tracks in the presets based on the track label, rather than id? It seems Handbrake is able to provide labels for the audio tracks of most DVDs. What about storing audio tr...

Import / Export Queue

It would be nice to be able to save & import queues from the GUI, rather than manually moving around the queue file stored in your home directory. From what I've read (but haven't personally confirmed), the Windows GUI supports this, but I can't find any way to do it with the Linux GUI.

Re: Green artefacts when encoding DVDs

I'm not too familar with the term "modulus," but a Google search turned up this trac commit: ( https://trac.handbrake.fr/changeset/3113 ), indicating this is only in play in anamorphic modes other than strict. All of my presets use strict anamorphic, so if my assumption here is true, I don't think t...

Re: Disappointed to see target file size go

I won't add to the turmoil by arguing, but will add my name to the list of users sad to see this feature go. I've never once had an issue with it performing poorly in the hundereds of encodes I've done with Handbrake. That said, as long as average bitrate remains, I will keep using Handbrake, and wi...

Re: Green artefacts when encoding DVDs

I don't have an activity log since the encodes were done months ago, but I can confirm a similar issue pops up occationally when encoding to Theora in the MKV container using Vorbis audio. I also see no issue in VLC, but do in any player that uses gstreamer as the backend (ie Totem). In my case, how...

Re: WebM support

Please don't remove Theora! I use Handbrake with Theora exclusively. While I agree it isn't as good as h.264, it is currently the ONLY viable format that isn't patent-encumbered. While VP8 has great potential, it isn't supported out-of-the-box in most GNU/Linux distros yet, plus it hasn't been aroun...

Re: [Rejected] ETA for entire queue rather than just each jo

Figured as much. How about a "time elapsed" counter for the entire queue instead? That way if you have several reasonably similar files, you could mentally estimate how much longer based on how long it has taken so far and the current position in the queue. Plus, it could be a decent pseudo-benchmar...

[Rejected] ETA for entire queue rather than just each job

Currently, the queue window shows the ETA for the currently processing job. It would be great if there was also an ETA for all jobs in the queue, so you'd have a general idea when the queue would finish processing. I realize such an estimate probably wouldn't be super accurate, but it would still be...

Re: [Invalid] Lagarith encoded AVI files are not recognized

Sadly, there is no Lagarith support in ffmpeg. However, there is support for huffyuv sources -- and huffyuv is almost as good for many purposes.

Edit: Re-reading your post, I see that you'd already considered that. Nevermind.

Re: Settings to obtain a loseless mkv

If I am understanding the tooltip correctly, x264 with a RF value of 0 makes the video lossless, correct? So couldn't you just use that along with audio passthrough in a MKV container, and end up with a lossless (although likely unreasonalby large) file? Or am I misunderstanding what that feature do...

Elapsed time display on queue window for current encode

Currently, the queue window shows you the ETA for the currently processing item. It would be nice if it would also show you the elapsed time since it started working on that item. This would be handy so you could make a guess as to how long your entire queue will take to process (assuming your video...

Re: Theora / Vorbis encoding performance with multiple cores

That's was I was afraid of. I do want to use open formats, yes. And I agree that VP8/WebM is superior to Theora. But HandBrake makes things very easy, and is much better than other GUI tools that do support VP8. If I'm reading the GUI's tool tips appropriately, I could encode with x264 at a constant...

Re: Display title's runtime in minutes

Use constant bitrate. MB/min * 17 = kbps Add the size of your audio track (usually 160 or 384kbps). Wow... that's much easier... :D I'm not sure why I never thought to try something like that. It makes perfect sense given how the "target size" option works. Out of curiosity, where does the "17" com...

Re: Theora / Vorbis encoding performance with multiple cores

I've been doing some unscientific tests, and it would seem that the Theora encoder maxes out one of my CPU's cores, and keeps the others all around 40-50% usage. I'm not sure what to conclude from this in regards to adding two additional cores -- will it likely run each additional core at 40-50% als...

Display title's runtime in minutes

I'd love to see HandBrake display a title's runtime in minutes, alongside the current "01h18m39s" format. Something like "01h18m39s / 78min" would be great. I currently use the "target size" option to specify an approx output size, and have (through trial and error) determined a "file size per minut...

Theora / Vorbis encoding performance with multiple cores

I'm considering upgrading my quad core 3.2ghz AMD CPU to one that is also 3.2ghz, but has six cores instead of four. I did some searching on the forums, and have read many discussions regarding how well x264 does (or doesn't) scale regarding raw CPU clock speed vs # of cores. However, I encode all o...

Re: I thought Handbrake was free....

Per the GPL, source code distribution is required only if their changes represent a "derivative work". As they claim to have changed nothing except the titlebar, what they are doing does not qualify as a "derivative work" and thus no source distribution is required (i.e. the GPL really doesn't care...

Or you could just use x264 which has superior video quality for a given file size anyway. Re: [svn2838] MKV Files with Theora video won't play in Mplayer

mkvmerge and HandBrake do not share any common upstream libraries. So the only common factors are theora and the players. My guess would be theora changed something in the video stream that conforms to spec, but was unexpected by those players. And since the most recent svn version of mplayer alrea...

Re: [svn2838] MKV Files with Theora video won't play in Mplayer

From your description, this must be an mplayer problem. You can create a file completely independently of HandBrake that demonstrates the problem. That makes it very unlikely that handbrake is the source of the problem. Also, I tried it with the latest svn version of mplayer and it works fine. I th...

[Invalid] [2838] MKV Files with Theora won't play in Mplayer

Converting to Theora video (with Vorbis audio) in an MKV container produces a file that will not play back properly in Mplayer (or MythTv's "Mythvideo" internal player, for that matter). Audio plays back fine, but the video is garbled and not remotely viewable or recognizable. VLC 0.9.9a will play b...
