Re: encoding bluray to mkv - quality over file size.

I would suggest that it's much more important to encode at 22 and then mux the HD track in (which you obviously aren't doing, as Wall-E's HD track alone adds about 2GB to the encode -- and on a good surround system it blows away the compressed version). You are correct, my receiver is old and doesn...

mduell wrote: Are you doing full resolution encodes from Blu-ray?
I am. I keep the resolutions as is, and have Anamorphic set to Strict.

Handbrake does an amazing job. With the RF set to 18 the picture still looks deep and detailed, yet HB is still able to shrink a movie like Wall-e from 20g to under 4.

Re: encoding bluray to mkv - quality over file size.

"55%" quality is nearly indistinguishable from the original Blu-ray; way better than DVD. I disagree. I think it varies from person to person and disk to disk. I've done tests with multiple movies and gotten the opinions of everyone in my family. At an RF of 22 we find the movies all lack...

Re: How come no DTS or 5.1?

Yes, pretty much. Most BD movies are contained in a single m2ts file. For those that are not, I wrote a program that reads the playlist and splices the correct segments together. Holy crap, that works! I've been spending hours ripping to disk then converting to a new .m2ts when I haven't had to. Th...

Re: How come no DTS or 5.1?

I have transcoded several blu-ray sources with dts-hd audio. I always transcode directly from the BD (after anydvd does it's job). The BD specification requires that every TrueHD audio have an ac3 core and every dts-hd have a dts core. Other sources (like hddvd) do not have this requirement for ac3...

Re: How come no DTS or 5.1?

DTS-HD has a regular DTS core. Handbrake can passthru this DTS core. Hmm. That's odd. I tried to do one with a DTS-master track just recently, and HB didn't even see it. There was no DTS passthru option. I had to redo my m2ts file with eac3to and extract just the DTS core from the source before HB ...

Re: How come no DTS or 5.1?

Looking at the logs, it appears to be a DTS-Master track. Handbrake can't grock high-definition audio.

Re: Constant quality settings for HD

As developers and mods have pointed out across the forums, anything over around 65% CQ is going to be overkill. 80% absolutely falls into this category. When I started using 0.9.4 several months back I had to write new presets. Despite what everyone was telling me in the chatroom, I kept tinkering ...

Re: Trouble with Batman Begins

When you say "ffmpeg has trouble with it", is it the version I have installed on my PC (from the K-lite codec pack I use) or is the encoder built into Handbrake and I'm pretty much SOL for this particular movie? Neither. HandBrake uses ffmpeg internally as the decoder ;-) But closer to yo...

Re: Trouble with Batman Begins

I get a windows popup saying Handbrake ended unexpectedly. Well, looks like something in your source is causing HandBrake to crash. This may happen sometimes when the source is VC-1, as ffmpeg can have trouble with this codec. When you say "ffmpeg has trouble with it", is it the version I...

Re: Trouble with Batman Begins

Well, there might be useful information at the end of the log (which we're still missing). Also, what does Mediainfo report for the frame count? That is how the log ended. I get a windows popup saying Handbrake ended unexpectedly. And the CLI window shows it sitting at 90 odd % What I posted above ...

Re: Trouble with Batman Begins

To figure out why it stops encoding 8 minutes before the end, the encode log would help a lot too. Can do. I figured the problem was with the scanning part, since it was reporting the movie as being 8 minutes shorter than it was, but here is the encode log as well. The encode and the scan logs are ...

Trouble with Batman Begins

I've ripped the movie from my Blu-ray disc, using AnyDVD HD. I then run it through Clown_BD to create a single .m2ts file keeping the audio tracks I want. The .m2ts plays fine in MediaPortal, MPC-HC , no problems. I've tried for a while now to use Handbrake to turn it into an MKV and it would keep d...

Looking for good documentation on FFdshow

Does anyone a link to a good reference document for FFdshows audio decoder?

I'm having some issues with playback and my Yamaha receiver, which I think I can fix if I could just understand the settings, and the ffdshow wiki has most of the audio section undocumented.

Re: Constan Quality Vs. Avg. Bitrate

Thanks, I'll give that a try. I'm also going to try some by setting a average bitrate as a % of the original and see what happens.

Just didn't want to be heading in the completely wrong direction, since it takes about a day each time I encode from an HD source.

Re: Constan Quality Vs. Avg. Bitrate

....nor should it. Just like you read in the documentation. True, and I wasn't really expecting a 1 for 1 reduction in size based on the quality set. I was expecting more than I got however. As the 61% setting was getting me a less than 20% reduction in size. nightstrm mentioned his files were comi...

Constan Quality Vs. Avg. Bitrate

I converted all of my DVDs into MKVs using the film preset, and setting the Average bitrate to 2000 Kbps. They all look great. I decided to do the same for the handful of Bluray and HDDVD discs I have. I read the now defunct "Post you best settings" thread, and noticed a lot of people were...

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but if I want to tryout this snapshot, do I uninstall 0.9.3 first, or does this install separately from it?

Re: Gracious Thanks to you Handbrake Devs

I wanted to add my thanks to the mix. I've tried just about every other encoding platform around (AutoGK, Gordiang Knot, MeGUI, Mencoder) and a few for-pay ones that I either bought or tried the demos for. Handbrake is, bar none, the easiest to use and provides the best, most consistent quality outp...
