Re: Support for EDL

What format are your recordings? I personally use the Hauppauge HD PVR which can be configured to produce AVCHD-compliant MPEG2-TS files. These can be handled by libav which means they can be handled by avidemux, a program designed with editing in mind. Since I hate commercials, too, I turn to that ...

Re: DTS-HD Decoding

I thought Handbrake already did DTS-MA decoding, meaning transcoding to FLAC is possible (some players can't do the lossless part of DTS-MA plus it's a commercial codec so there are licensing issues, but FLAC is FOSS--spec is BSD, program is GPL).

Re: REQ: Please add Subtitle title field/trackname

Seconded. This is especially useful for multiple tracks with the same language but different purposes (say, two French tracks, one's the dialogue but the other is commentary or forces/translations only). Waiting until after the encode to tag with mkvpropedit is not ideal because the context of the o...

Re: Red marking of double subtitles

Perhaps not as an error but perhaps just some kind of indicator. Say highlight areas where the source track is used more than once with some color indication (perhaps yellow or dark gray just to indicate them). Depending on how context can be obtained, perhaps the indicators need only show when one ...

Re: Add chapter markers

I believe this has been addressed in the past as "not the intended purpose". The primary purpose is to rip from media, thus the focus on discs and images. Re-encoding existing media files is a job best left for more generic encoders like ffmpeg (which has facilities for custom chaptering)....

Re: Language setting on audio

Language tags in mkv files are a fixed feature and are very easy to edit in place using mkvpropedit (part of the mkvtools). You just need to know which track it is and what your target language code is.

Re: Cluster / multiple machines cpu encoding

The main problem is in task delegation, especially in a one-pass or first-pass encode where the encoder doesn't know how it plans to structure the GOPs. There was a similar discussion in the x264 board when they were going into multi-core encoding. Basically, trying to delegate by GOPs involves a wh...

Another possibility is to use a subtitle file and then burn it into your encode.

Re: Speex Audio Codec Support

If Handbrake can't understand a codec, like Speex in your case, you'll need to transcode it to something that can.

In this case, you need another program, probably a version of ffmpeg compiled with libspeex, to convert the audio track into something like AAC or MP3 that Handbrake can recognize.

Re: import/export chapter timestamps

However, there were a couple of times I wanted to add chapters to a DVD source before encoding. I don't know if it is still makes a difference in HB 0.10.2, but in 0.9.9, HB will encode an I-frame at chapter stops, so we can jump to that frame quickly. It still does because it's needed for proper c...

Re: Option to choose subtitle font.

What he's saying is that you should mux your source to a Matroska file first, attaching the fonts you want into it in the process. With an MKV source and MKV output, Handbrake will happily transfer all attached fonts intact and any subtitles you choose to keep.

Re: Add ass file support to handbreak

Is there a reason you need to "burn in" the subtitles? I suspect what you're saying is that you're trying to burn in an ASS subtitle that has "Opaque Box" subtitles set. I'm familiar with the problem that not all ASS rendering libraries will support all ASS tags (for example, man...

Re: Improved Closed Caption handling

Just so you know, the Deja Vu series of fonts are public domain so are free to use. You can use Deja Vu Sans Mono and then attach it to the MKV to ensure it's viewable the same way no matter where it goes (including systems that don't have a Courier font). Just noting.

Re: Override Audio and Subtitle Languages

I note that current snapshots do correctly label Matroska audio and subs, but other times these identifications may be missing and Undefined, meaning this could still be useful.

Override Audio and Subtitle Languages

Please describe what you would like to see added to HandBrake: The option to override listed languages in the Audio and Subtitle tabs. Why would you like to see this added: Some sources like Matroska do not carry over the languages used in their tracks (even when labeled), leaving them Undetermined...

Re: import/export chapter timestamps

As I understand it, the feature is only implemented for sources that include chapter information in them. If you can repackage your source into something like a Matroska, a possible workaround would be to insert chapter data into the Matroska using mkvmerge's chapter editor, then use the Matroska as...

Re: subtitles vertical position

I wish to provide a corollary to this request, this time in regards to PGS/SUP subtitles. Now, many BluRay titles letterbox their feature because it's not in 16:9 aspect (it's like 2.35:1, for example). Now, most BluRay subtitles keep their subtitles out of the letterbox, but some (particularly WB) ...

OK, I found it. Like I said, this ISO comes from DVDFab. Re: Why aren't BluRay ISOs supported?

I am trying svn7261 right now, but it won't read BluRay ISOs I have (they're made by DVDFab but Daemon Tools Lite can read them). It simply reports no titles found. Are there differing standards concerning them, and if so, which program(s) make ISOs compatible with the nightly? Or has the support be...

Re: 4:3 to 16:9

There are a few approaches you can do depending on how the original recordings appear. 1. If your original recording is letterboxed (has black areas at the top and bottom of your screen) or you simply don't care about the top and bottom of the picture, you can crop the picture using the Picture tab....

Re: Can't encode this video which plays fine on VLC

I may be wrong, but according to the log, Handbrake seems to be having difficulty reading the source directory. If you'll read the log, you'll note some "Permission denied" errors. You may want to check the directory to make sure it's free and clear and has proper ownership permissions and...

Daemon Tools Lite IS freeware. And as long as you don't use their front end (use the shell extensions instead), you don't get nagged.

Thanks for the update and details. It helps a lot to know just why something's the way it is, and I look forward to BluRay ISO support eventually reaching the mainstream release. In the meantime, I can get by with using Daemon Tools to mount the ISOs as a virtual drive.

Basically, what I wrote in the subject.
