Your portable player is obsolete.
A mid priced tablet will do much better.

Re: Banding/quality issues in 8-bit modes

There is no visible difference in banding.
The 8 bit samples do appear to be a bit softer, and to investigate, we would need the required encode logs for each render, properly identified, along with a source sample. Without a reference, how on earth would we know if there even is banding?

Correct. And encoding to 8 bit output should result in no additional color banding. I'll look at what you uploaded.

Early support for chapter marks only existed in M4V. Now not needed.

Re: Banding/quality issues in 8-bit modes

If you render 8 bit from 10 bit source, there will be banding. That one is etched in stone. The downsample/dither algorithm used in Handbrake is the best in the business. My two expen$ive NLEs cant touch it, and I recommend Handbrake instead for downsampling conversions. You may be particularly sens...

Re: Only half of dual layer dvd gets ripped

But then how does VLC play the whole movie fine (presumably repeatably)? I'm not following why this is necessarily a layer problem… Decoding for realtime playback and unpacking a stream to raw bits for recoding are two entirely different things. A is dirty and can survive stream errors in varying d...

Handbrake is an Encoder that has minimal or no impact on quality.

Re: Recommended preset for 1990s home video?

I want the highest possible quality, but of course don't want a larger file size if it won't add any quality. That is well stated. Welcome to the forum. You don't need to worry that much about your encode settings. The presets mentioned are generous compared to your analog source resolution and DV ...

Re: value of QP

Hi10p is a lame duck format. Unless you have a specific player you need it for, I don't suggest it for general use. It was replaced by h265/HEVC, which is more efficient. With regard to QP, I copied this quote: Unless you know what you’re doing and you explicitly want this, do not use this mode! Set...

Re: 10bit x264 playback support on consumer devices

x264 Hi10P profile died on the vine the day h265/HEVC was released. I don't know if there is any consumer player support.
So unfortunately, the answer to your question is, "No."

That would be for you to compare the MediaInfo for the original and the encode. Metadata is generated fresh for every encode, and obscures old metadata, although not its collateral.

Re: VHS to MP4..enhance quality

Use a set top dvd recorder or Advc 300, not a usb analog capture device. If you have FireWire, an old Canon Z-Series from Goidwill will do. That is actually great because you can run it through NeatVideo plugin for VirtualDub before encoding in Vegas. That said, your tape is 4:1:1 -> 4:2:0 capture f...

Re: MP4 to Avi

Oh no, Vegas Pro is an editor of choice for those who use Handbrake as their encoder of choice. Done it commercially for a decade. You just have to give Vegas the RIGHT mp4 files, and that does not include Variable Frame Rate! It does have other AVC limitations and we can tell you exactly how to set...

You are ten years late to use Handbrake as a ripper. Follow @Woodstock's advice.

Re: NVENC using constant bitrate

I get a "mediocre" approximation of RF20 software at CQ13 hardware, so yeah.
I don't use it because the file size is larger and I would never publish it to YT or anywhere.
Would prefer a fast chip without GPU encoding.
