Re: Predicted speed increase
It only affects a small number of programs that are compiled on (IIRC older?) Intel compilers, Apparently, it's still an issue, even now: http://www.amdzone.com/phpbb3/viewtopic.php?f=532&t=138574&p=204319&hilit=intel+compiler 1065T doesn't seem to have an official Geekbench score, but t...

Re: Predicted speed increase
Take these benchmarks with a pinch of salt; it's well known that Intel's compiler cripples AMD CPUs on Windows. If you're running Linux, you'll get pure, unadulterated speed on any 1xxxt X6 cpu. While we're on the subject of benchmarks, my 1065t system achieves a Geekbench score of 9812 (Ubuntu). Th...

Re: Performance Comparison between Windows, Mac and Linux?
VLC isn't used by the Windows version of HandBrake .... If your encoding a copy protected source, it's obviously going to be slower due to the "noise" that your encoding and likely a ton of read errors. That would make sense. The DVD was encrypted, and yes the video was scrambled and the ...

Re: Performance Comparison between Windows, Mac and Linux?
I can also vouch that Windows encodes are in the region of THREE TIMES slower than Linux encodes. Running an AMD 1065t at stock speeds, the computer achieved average encodes of 190 fps using the normal profile and a PAL DVD source on Ubuntu 11.04 64 bit. On Windows 7 64 bit, and with the same settin...

Re: Necessary feedback on the forums (Got a gripe? Keep it here)
My own experience of the Handbrake forums is that there are jewels to be found from digging around the threads. Overall, I've been happy with the support. However, this forum does have a bit of a reputation... on the Ubuntu forums at least, something along the lines of 'Do not put hands in animal en...

Re: Necessary feedback on the forums (Got a gripe? Keep it here)
I'm quite sure there is nothing more frustrating for devs and mods for the same kind of questions to keep popping up again and again. That said, I'm sure someone can think of a 'cut & paste' response which deals with the poster briefly but in a non-offensive way. I've had private messages from o...

Re: H.264 / MPEG-4 FFMpeg on Blu-ray rips
Indeed, I had noticed this 'banding' effect, which resembles playing a 16 bit video game. With QP 4 or 3, this effect vanished, at least using the material I was encoding (Shakespeare in Love). x264 has more stops than a pipe organ; I just don't have 6 months of my life to spend learning which ones ...

Re: H.264 / MPEG-4 FFMpeg on Blu-ray rips
For any given bitrate, x264 will produce better quality video, expecially where the advanced options are used. BUT these options would make even a brand-new top-spec Mac Pro crawl. Unless you have some Power 6+ iron kicking around, I wouldn't bother. Ffmpeg is good enough if not starved of bitrate.

Log? Presets?
Use ffmpeg as the encoder, with about 90-93% constant quality.

Hugeman,
There are better instructions for compiling to be found bundled with the source code rather than in the wiki. Perhaps you should run through the steps again for the sake of completeness. jbrjake's code on the 64 bit compile works like a charm on my iMac. Good luck!

Re: Core2 being slow. Very slow.
Unless you absolutely have to encode in x264, why don't you encode with FFmpeg? In some instances, it can be 10x faster than x264. Sure, for any given bitrate x264 will be better, but unless you're streaming on the internet (unlikely in HD!) a few extra megabytes won't hurt.

Okay, I did another rip with settings identical to yours (though not input material I'm sure). Average FPS 97 At this point I should probably 'fess up and admit that I compiled a recent nightly build of Handbrake on my iMac... 64 bit flavour, of course. I don't bother with x264, as HD space these da...
