To be clear it's using 12 of 12 cores, although 3 of them only to 75-90%... basically exactly the diminishing gains the docs talk about.
thanks, so it is limitation of ffmpeg and how they implemented threading to handle the work load.
It's not really ffmpeg, it's mostly x264 and somewhat HB.

Don't crank it up to the max. It can be quite effective at reducing size without drastically changing the image.

Does the activity log show how much grain is there in the video?
Does it tell us definitively what settings OP used? Yup
Does it report definitively what the encoding outcome was? Yup.
Are there a lot of heuristics in there we can use to make a more educated guess if grain is the real problem? Yup.

HB doesn't even handle 10-bit through the pipeline or HDR yet, some newfangled hybrid thing is quite a ways off.

PS: By the way I have a dedicated 256 GB SSD as a cache only ( not the system SSD), with Handbrake I have not seen a parameter to declare it as a work disk, that could accelerate the conversions just like with SW's like RAR and others (Photoshop).
No, not useful to HB.

I did the conversion a couple days ago so there's really no log to report:
When you read the How-to at the top of every page in bold underlined text on a pink background, it will explain where to find the relevant encode log from a few days ago.

An Activity Log is required for support requests. Please read How-to get an activity log? for details on how and why this should be provided.

Sure it's possible. The output filesize is going to be fairly large for the quality.

Re: Change Output Format & Size

Impossible to say really. Encoder settings matter.

There's always quality loss, you never retain all of it. The trick is keeping the quality loss to small to notice, which has little to do with file size.

Re: Desired: GUI-to-CLI generator

Duplicating the documentation of all the options that are the same for MP4 and MKV makes no sense at all.

Re: Another "why is h265 so slow" posts

RF 18 on slow ended up being slightly more than 28 hours rather than the estimated 19+ at the start of the encode. Output file was 9.9GB, so roughly 20 hours more to save 1.5 GB in file size. Meh. The quality scale isn't the same across different speed presets. Pick your preset first, then find you...

Re: Many subtitle problems

HB knows, that's why it's burning in one PGS track when you ask for one or more. By the way. I read the MP4 standard a long time ago and have never used it until now. I believe it does not say that it doesn't support picture subtitles. I believe it doesn't say that it does. There's quite a differenc...

Re: Many subtitle problems

If I fiddle repeatedly with 'Add Track' 'Add All Remaining Tracks' I can get '1 English (PGS)' to finally appear, but none of the 17 other subtitles. '1 English (PGS)' has the 'Burn In' check box grayed out with a check mark in it. MP4 supports zero PGS tracks. HB can burn in one subtitle track to ...

A pull request on github would be best for merging; next best option would be a patchfile formatted diff.

The format for the online docs is markdown.

Where do we begin... read the forum, clueless users everywhere and nowhere good to point them to.

Also my own pet peeve the formatting of CLI options that take their own options.
