Re: Converting a GUI preset to CLI for batching

mduell — thanks, will try again with the --help CLI info again. So the encode log and settings do provide all the info I need then? i.e. GUI doesn't have additional options that the CLI doesn't? random mashup? nah. Originally based on JoeTheZombiePS3 settings from way back. Was experimenting with di...

Re: Converting a GUI preset to CLI for batching

Ritsuka… Great news, thank you! I'll try and figure out if that will work on the MacGUI side for what I'm doing.

Nonetheless, my original question remains… how do I convert the encoding strings I'm using now into a CLI string?

Thanks again for your help!

Converting a GUI preset to CLI for batching

As Mac Handbrake GUI [Version 6902svn x86_64 (2015021401)] still doesn't support presets involving the CC subtitles setting being applied to a batch of Transport Stream encodes, I'd like to try and do this via CLI. Now that I'm trying the CLI, I can see how much the GUI insulates me from all sorts o...

Best bang-for-the $… any OS…

If I want to make a compression mule dedicated solely to Handbrake compression, what would give me the best bang for the buck? Assume a budget of say $1.5 k total. The goal for the compression (1080p TS MPEG2 or H264 streams captured off a cable box) is to be as tight as possible, not necessarily as...

Re: Optimum # of cores vs speed - Xeon E5 etc.

Interesting… which are the thread-limited options in Handbrake? The resizing / scaling filters or the noise filters? Are there others to consider?

My basic workflow involves encoding incoming 1080i ts files to a 720p and passing the AC3 audio through untouched.

Optimum # of cores vs speed - Xeon E5 etc.

All other things being equal, I presume that the more cores you have, the better speed you will get with Handbrake, especially with the newer/nightly builds. But all things aren't equal, more cores, more $, unless we downshift in GHz… So of the configuration (assuming RAM, Disk I/O etc remain the sa...

Re: Whoa.. was I dreaming? x264 speed increase ?

As noted in my original post I always did use the same preset. Click on the preset, set subtitle (since subtitle doesn't stick in the presets on the Mac version) and let it do its thing. Now that I've found the few that were encoded quite a bit more quickly than before I see that the applied setting...

Whoa.. was I dreaming? x264 speed increase ?

Background: always using the same encoding preset. This doesn't change. I download the nightly builds quite often to take advantage of any of the latest x264 speed bumps. Same types of video files (MPEG-2 1080i TS files). A while ago (mid-January) I glanced at my encode logs and saw that instead of ...

Re: Variable vs Constant Framerate for MPEG-TS streams

Thanks mduell and Rodeo for your answers and bearing with me here… Is the FPS (same as source/5/10/15…60 fps) drop down menu specifically for output conformation to ensure that it is at whatever setting is chosen? •If the original is 29.97 and we specify 'same as source' then the output would be 29....

Re: Variable vs Constant Framerate for MPEG-TS streams

Playback devices = PS3 or AppleTV 2/3. So what then is the differences in the options for video encode re: frame rate… 'same as source' would imply that if the frame rate is variable, the encode's frame rate would be variable. If that's the case, then isn't the option 'constant vs variable' frame ra...

Re: Variable vs Constant Framerate for MPEG-TS streams

As it is, all files go through VideoRedo first to eliminate the adverts etc. So that aspect is already dealt with. :-) Re: VF for fluctuating FR, yea… but after cable co 'uprezing' and 'standardizing'… that is a bit of a moot point no? So the question remains… VF/CF ≠ same as source? If not, can som...

Variable vs Constant Framerate for MPEG-TS streams

[Using: Version 5251svn x86_64 (2013021401)] My cable provider likes doing things to 'standardize' all of its channels. They've settled on 1080i as their channel rebroadcast format, upscaling things such as PBS from 720 to 1080i. So all of my TS streams are somewhat 'standardized' to this: [00:12:40...

Re: .TS File gone again

A workaround that seems to work with the sample you've provided: Use VLC (I used 2.x but the last 1.12?.x versions should work fine too), transcode it from its existing TS form to MPEG-PS encapsulation. Throw it at Handbrake and it works. Only thing you don't get is the subtitles (which VLC can disp...

Re: Automatically cutting commercials, converting to mp4

Short answer: can't be done 100% accurately through automation. Lots of TV channels play fast'n'loose with commercials, sometimes without a blank-frame or audio channel switch, sometimes a jump-cut in the middle of the show straight to a commercial, sometimes the DOG (Digital OnScreen Graphic/Statio...

Re: Tweaking a 1080i-720p PS3 encoding setting for max Q min

Drop the custom keyframe intervals - they reduce compression efficiency for no good reason. Both the PS3 and AppleTV 3 will handle the default keyints (min. 1*fps, max. 10*fps) just fine. Custom Keyframe intervals in HB are found where? I see the adv strings option I have the value: ref=4:b-adapt=2...

Re: Tweaking a 1080i-720p PS3 encoding setting for max Q min

Spydor: Frank, do you see any audio sync issues at all (however minor) with your HB settings on the PS3? I could see a very small sync issue with my audio tracks... esp AC3 passthrough. When I say 'small' issue, I mean off by about 1/8 sec. Only real noticeable when watching for lip-sync. I was only...

Tweaking a 1080i-720p PS3 encoding setting for max Q min Gb

I've been happily encoding using HB for a long time and using the PS3 to play the resulting files. I'm not particularly concerned with the speed of an encode and I reduce all the TS files from their cable-provider mangled 1080i to 720p. Given that the video is often up-sampled/faked-out by the cable...

Re: HandBraking the PS3 (The PS3 Owners Thread)

A useful bit of news for those who have read this far is that as of iTunes 10.6.x and the AppleTV 3, the settings that work for the PS3 seem also to work fine with the AppleTV3 too. Bonus! :-) (this is with this year's official release of Handbrake and confirmed with the nightly build of 2012040501.

In the Devices forum there's a listing of what the assorted iPods' H264 playback limitations are… Is there somewhere (on this site? or via Google) listed what the specific built-in OS X-native Quicktime 7 or the 'new' Quicktime X's playback limitations are? Using nightly build 4405… Choosing a folder of TS files (all of which have a CC track) , specifying an encoding setting which includes CC, adding the entire folder via "File:All all titles to queue" does not result in the CC setting being preserved for any of the titles. Re: Can I switch "containers" after encoding?

As an FYI: Note that Avidemux will not extract from files, nor convert subtitles that are NOT burnt into the actual movie/image. At least there's no option I can find as of Avidemux3. For that you will need to extract the subtitle into an set file using a tool like 'subler' or 'ccextract' and then r...

Ok, so that clarifies things. I'm using the MacGUI, so I'm SOL and will have to do it manually. :-)

Ok, good to know. Don't know how much work it would be to bring that into the MacGUI, but as I haven't coded in a few decades, I'll just do it manually until that changes. :-)

Thx for the info Rodeo!

CC setting being preserved in Presets?

Is there anyway, apart from manually toggling the CC state in the 'Subtitles' section each time, to make a saved 'Preset' include the CC state? All my encoding streams (HD TS from cable) have CC streams embedded in them so I'd like to include that as a standard 'default' encoding state preserved in ...
