Re: Bay Trail and QSV

See the link that Rodeo gave for a solution to QSV on the Silvermont chips and see viewtopic.php?f=9&t=29724 for an overview of the performance of these Bay Trail processors.

Intel Core i7-4650U and Intel Celeron (Bay Trail) J1800

My goal in the last few weeks was to build an entirely silent encode box, to lower the burden on my Macbook Air (the Core i7 machine). The requirements were that it could be used to rip Blu-Ray to an mkv and subtitle OCR (basically ruling out anything without Wintel), it had to be cheap, it had to b...

Re: Poor QSV performance on Intel NUC DN2820FYKH

Seems like HandBrake or any other tool for QSV is not at fault, it's just Intel holding back on the drivers. It took me quite some effort but hidden in the corners of the internet is this little page: http://www.touslesdrivers.com/index.php?v_page=23&v_code=40504 . For those that don't speak Fre...

Re: Poor QSV performance on Intel NUC DN2820FYKH

After launching the thread over here and after ordering the given PC, I can now confirm that the J1800 is not offering the normal QSV performance :) . I would not say it is as bad as the experience from overwale, but QSV is definitely slower than normal encoding. Still, ARK confirms that this partic...

Re: Bay Trail and QSV

I saw that one, indeed. I'm wondering if this is a false positive as the Intel Ark website is not reporting that CPU to have QSV support. I've found similar claims in the forum and around the web where people are using these latest Bay Trail processors to do QSV, without any built-in support listed ...

Bay Trail and QSV

QSV has changed the way in which I use Handbrake and, frankly, I couldn't live without it anymore :). However, thus far QSV required a fairly power-hungry core processor (or a laptop with a core processor). Luckily, this seems to be changing with the influx of a fair number of cheap Celeron and Pent...

Re: [Solved] QSV speed problems: VC-1 Blu-Ray

Thank you, never noticed that it was a VC-1.

Also thanks for the hint about decomb. The setting I use is basically a "one size fits all" for Blu-Rays and DVDs. It has served me well so far but apparently there are border cases where it needs to be tweaked a bit, such as this one.

[Solved] QSV speed problems: VC-1 Blu-Ray

I am having issues with a very limited number of Blu-Rays when converting them using Intel QSV. Normally everything works fine and I get around 240fps. Let's get into the details. The Main Features of the Blu-Rays are extracted using MakeMKV. I'm using the (almost) latest nightly of Handbrake to con...

Re: how to increase encoding quality

So, I got the settings nailed. It was in the settings after all. The input was just fine, the decoder hardly matters. Now, for this particular source (animation) the solutions seems to be to allow rather aggressive psychovisual trellis (value of 0.5) as well as upping qcomp (I chose 1 as the maximum...

Re: how to increase encoding quality

Just to confirm, played on my WDLive I have seen zero blockiness or any other problems even with my blu-ray sources (which I use the Handbrake High Preset now with no changes other than to output to MKV and passthrough the DTS or AC3 audio). It's not Handbrake that's causing the problem. The more t...

Re: how to increase encoding quality

I can't see your screenshots. Upload them to another site please. There's no way you're seeing real blockiness in such high-bitrate encodes. I expect it's a decoder error/glitch, like weightp=2 incompatibility. (Or it could be the usual blocking in dark regions, but I doubt it...) Indeed, this does...

Re: how to increase encoding quality

This is more a question of "what specific x264 advanced options can be used to improve the quality in general, beyond those that are available in the GUI of handbrake". They all can be. The macgui has widgets for the most popular settings. The advanced option string in the text field belo...

Re: how to increase encoding quality

And your encoding log is where? Take whatever default setting you want. Or remove all advanced settings to resort to the defaults in x264. Make your pick. This is not a question of "I have a problem with my encode". This is more a question of "what specific x264 advanced options can ...

how to increase encoding quality

In the last few months, I have been encoding quite a number of BluRay sources. This works like a charm, but i am not entirely happy with the results. Let me first say that I am happy with roughly 95% of the encode. It is only in extreme cases that I see a bit too much blocking than I can tolerate fo...

Re: m4v with embedded subtitles: non-apple support?

Rodeo is correct: I want to keep my Apple equipment :). The AppleTV is in heave use and series such as futurama or the simpsons are wonderful for short train trips on the iPhone (which implies subtitles, because trains can be crowded at times, making it difficult to hear everything clearly). Now, th...

Re: m4v with embedded subtitles: non-apple support?

Thanks for the reply but actually, I do mind. I am talking about 2.5 TB worth of encoding of each and every DVD we have. This means roughly 5000 files. Which is exactly the reason why I do not want to run some script to remove the subtitles. Besides, I have no spare 2.5 TB to store the subtitle-less...

I understand that these embedded subtitles are not "standard" Actually, they are: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MPEG-4_Part_17 Interesting. And the Popcorn Hour developers keep on saying that it is no standard ... Time to mail them again :) Are there non-Apple devices that are not full-blo...

m4v with embedded subtitles: non-apple support?

Is there any non-Apple device that will play back m4v files with embedded subtitles? This works fine on anything from an AppleTV to an iPod to mplayer to VLC, but it fails terribly on both the WD TV and the popcorn hour. I understand that these embedded subtitles are not "standard", but th...

Re: iPod Touch / iPhone preset

Hmm, might be. My information on mbtree is quite old. I know that it is enabled whenever using b-frames, but I have not tested it in the last few weeks whether or not it is on without b-frames. Might be my mistake! Nevertheless, having it in the settings strings does no harm, so in the case that it ...

Re: iPod Touch / iPhone preset

The easiest way to decrease the file size is to lower the constant quality. You do this by raising the RF value from 20 to for example 21. You can also add ":mbtree=1" without the quotes at the end of the option string which you will find on the advanced tab. It then reads: cabac=0:ref=2:m...

Indeed, I know, that is exactly why I am posting it and explicitly asking to give these settings a go and give your opinion on them, in terms of encoded quality. For me the quality seems better, but I am notoriously bad in visually comparing different encodes. Which is exactly why I often run a batc...

Re: Best Quality, Small Size And And A Fast Rip

I have been running through a whole batch of encodes, trying to find some tweaks and I have come up with some results that were rather awkward to me. For reference, let me summarise what we have: level=30:ref=2:mixed-refs=1:bframes=0:b-adapt=0:direct=none:weightb=0:b-pyramid=0:me=hex:subq=6:analyse=...

Re: Best Quality, Small Size And And A Fast Rip

Wow, thank you Rodeo, to be honest, I hand-picked these settings from about 40 different sets that I tested over various RF and I never imagined that they could be further improved. I like it that you set the partitions yourself and I never even considered that this would offer me better compression...

Re: AppleTV Custom Presets - 0.9.4

@dynaflash: any reason why you would turn off trellis? Just wondering. Perhaps you might also turn off analysis and turn on no-dct-decimate. This may seem strange, but analysis hardly increases quality in my testing (both SSIM and double-blind), yet it significantly hurts encoding speeds (+- 30%). E...
