Re: Constant vs variable frame rate
I see, so am I correct in saying that using VFR actually is more accurate than CFR, even with blu-ray sources that "officially" (or mainly) are 24p, since there are a few instances when the actual frame rate fluctuates?

Re: Constant vs variable frame rate
Thanks for the explanation. However, if I use same as source with vfr, shouldn't it then anyway have a constant frame rate throughout the file since the source video is constant? Why would handbrake output a variable frame rate if the source doesn't have it?

Constant vs variable frame rate
Hi, I am ripping my blu-ray's (and some PAL dvd's) using the high profile preset. Playing them back on Plex Home Theater on my Samsung TV. My question is, the high preset has VFR checked as default; aren't blu-ray's encoded in 24p throughout, meaning that they are constant frame rate? Is there any r...

Re: Different decomb/deinterlace options?
Thanks. Actually the source dvd is PAL. But I'll try to encode it without any filters on and try the deinterlacer in Plex Home Theater since that's what I view my files on. Any comments/experience on the deinterlacer in PHT? Thanks all

Re: Different decomb/deinterlace options?
Nope, didn't try that, but I'll give it a go. Is there a similar auto detection option for the detelecine filter as decomb is for the deinterlace filter? Or can I leave detelecine on all the time and it can itself figure out if the content is telecined or not?

Different decomb/deinterlace options?
Hi, I recently converted an interlaced DVD using the High Profile preset. Using the default Decomb option, the resulting file was deinterlaceds, yes, but it was very choppy, skipping ahead each second or so. I saw there are other deinterlace/decomb options available. Can anyone explain to me the dif...

Re: Deinterlacing issues
Ugh... Maybe I'll just stick with not using any video filters and watch interlaced videos. At least this way the motion is smooth and I preserve all the frames. Watching on a 32 inch LCD from a normal distance, I don't notice much interlacing artifacts anyway, although they are there if I watch clos...

Deinterlacing issues
Hi, I have been ripping both movies and TV shows from DVD to be watched on my Apple TV, using the Apple TV preset. Since movies are progressive, I've found that it's best to not use any video filter when converting those. However, some TV shows are interlaced, so I check decomb. In my opinion the de...

Re: Converting from NTSC DVD to PAL mp4
I downloaded JES Deiterlacer, but it doesn't seem to accept dvd files as source.. back to square one :( Strange. I've managed to get it to open VOB files from my hard drive without issue. And it worst comes to the worst, MPEGStreamclip can convert VOB to MPEG, which it can also open. Does MPEG stre...

Re: Converting from NTSC DVD to PAL mp4
It does support 60Hz. It's a Sony KDL-32W4000. NTSC DVD's play fine on it. But for some reason, Apple TV at 60Hz doesn't look good. The picture seems soft and just slightly jerky, equally with NTSC and PAL video. But when outputting at 50Hz, PAL video looks sharp and clear and very smooth. NTSC vide...

Converting from NTSC DVD to PAL mp4
Hi, I live in the PAL area and thus most of my source material is in PAL format. When I convert normally I use the Apple TV preset, and setting my Apple TV to output 720p - 50Hz, they look amazing on my LCD. However, I do have some NTSC source DVD's that, when converted, looks jerky on my Apple TV. ...

Re: How-To: Automate DVD & Blu-Ray (Backup, Encoding & Tagging)
Second, are the handbrake encodes done using the best possible settings? I'm not concerned about storage space, but want to make sure that the movies are as good as they can be. I plan on only using these with either a Mac Mini or Apple TV fed into my TV. I would also like to know this. Are these s...

Thanks for the advice, I'll try lifting up the rear of my macbook. The weird thing is though that it does this randomly, not always when I convert. And usually while I'm doing something else. Like i may be browsing the web, then i quit Safari using comman+q, safari quits, and immediately the screen ...

MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz (4 GB Mem) Overheating
Hi, My MacBook is really overheating when converting a movie. I guess this is normal, but every now and then it freezes, and I have no choice but to force shut down by holding down the power button. I'm afraid this is going to damage my MacBook in the long run, and besides it's a pain when a movie i...

Damn, well thanks anyway. I did try one thing though, remains to be seen if it worked. I took another very similar DVD. Ripped a chapter from it using normal settings. Then I took the compressed DVD I wanted to rip, found a chapter that was only one second longer than on the other DVD, ripped it usi...
