Anything to change with using the ATV3 preset on Fire TV?
Or should I just continue to use the the ATV 3 preset as is? IIRC, the one downside to the ATV preset is that ATV's can't handle the sheer awesomeness of DTS (ok, so really it doesn't support it) and it gets converted to AAC/AC3. And looking at the device specs for the Fire TV, it doesn't look like ...

Build on OSX Mavericks failed due to missing directory
I didn't have this issue when I built Handbrake on my MBP running the latest OSX Mavericks but did on my iMac - I suspect it's probably just a glitch but wondering if the build needs to be more forgiving given the solution. The build broke because the /usr/X11/var directory didn't exist. And more sp...

Re: New iPad and Apple TV presets
i think we're all excited, well...i am anyway, about the ATV3 - it's been far too long in the making, IMHO. bottom line though, as partially mentioned above, people will need to get their hands on the actual device first, encode some movies with various settings, and see how they turn out. remember ...

Re: Preview encode using SRT file?
oh bummer. well that ends this little experiment.
what if i encoded the MKV into an MP4 (for AppleTV) and then re-encoded it again with the subtitles? Would that work?

Re: Preview encode using SRT file?
Thanks guys. @Rodeo, I'll do a git pull and rebuild, it's been a while since I've updated anyway. When you say soft subtitle track, do you mean from the SRT file or from the original video file? I've ripped a blu-ray to MKV and it's got the stubtitle track in there, I can see it with MP4Tools - but ...

Preview encode using SRT file?
If this has already been asked and answered, please point me in the right direction. I'm on a mac, but I think this is a platform-independent issue. If not, I'm wondering if there's a way to add an SRT file in the subtitles section and then see the results of using that file in preview mode. I tried...

Re: Handbrake hanging almost immediately in 10.6.7
If only I were smart enough to RTFM in the first place...Thanks...
So rebooting magically fixed the problem (ok Microsoft....er, Apple) and as such I don't have the log file anymore as it was clobbered by my next encoding session.
Some day I will learn. But not yesterday.

Handbrake hanging almost immediately in 10.6.7
I don't recall if I was able to successfully rip/encode a movie since upgrading to 10.6.7 but I definitely cannot now. I've tried completely deleting the build directory for SVN HB and rebuilding again but the same problem happens: When I launch HB, the app comes up and the open title dialog appears...

Re: HD tag in iTunes
After a couple hours of searching across a bunch of different sites, adding the HD tag is incredibly easy, safe*, fast, and free. For those of you on a Mac, you can add the tag via Subler (http://code.google.com/p/subler): Open the file in Subler, click the "Other Settings" tab, click the ...

Re: AppleTV vs. AppleTV 2 (and BD encodes)
I'm confused. Apple's specs say they can handle the same resolution. Is there some facet (or a combination of several) of a BD encode that the 1st gen can't handle at a higher resolution? (e.g., fps)

AppleTV vs. AppleTV 2 (and BD encodes)
--EDITED for typos-- It was my understanding that the ATV and ATV2 were essentially identically the same except a faster processor and no hard drive for the latter. I thought that the supported resolution was still 720p on both devices. If this is the case, can someone please tell me why when I'm en...

Re: Source resolution vs. output resolution question
but if the source resolution is the same, how can the actual aspect ratios be different? is the source resolution the same for most DVDs and the actual non-black picture in the movie defines the actual aspect ratio and cropping chosen by HB?

Source resolution vs. output resolution question
I'm a little confused here - hopefully someone can set me straight. I just encoded Avatar from DVD to m4v using the AppleTV preset and the source and output resolutions were the same, namely 720x480 - and no surprise, it took ~3 hours to complete and the file is > 3GB. But I just threw in another di...

Re: DVD rip/encode vs. Blu-ray rip/encode (for AppleTV)
Do you or anyone else mind elaborating on this any? I assume it's all video related as AppleTV won't support anything higher than Dolby 5.1. Thanks.

DVD rip/encode vs. Blu-ray rip/encode (for AppleTV)
I've done some digging but can't seem to find a definitive (and updated) answer to this question: Is there a movie quality difference between ripping/encoding a regular DVD movie vs. ripping and encoding a Blu-ray movie if the target platform is AppleTV? I don't care about disk space as I've a 1.5TB...

Re: DVD is unrecognized as a DVD O.o?
If you have macports (http://www.macports.org) installed, install the port titled "vobcopy" (via the command, from Terminal.app: 'sudo port install vobcopy' - this is how i rip all my dvds unless the disk contains "bad" sectors. macports is free. installing the vobcopy port will ...

Choppy/jittery picture when encoding Schindler's List
I've tried this multiple times now over the span of several months with the same results (including different SVN revisions of HB). I've ripped both sides of the Schindler's List disk and combined with DTOX. The .dvdmedia file (actually just a directory containing the VIDEO_TS folder) plays just fin...

Re: Severe blocking/pixelization on Apple TV w/ HB
OOOOh, thanks! I tried w/ the 08 OCT version of HB on my MP pro and it worked fine, but the same rip on the latest SVN of HB still produced the pixelizations. I'll try again w/ the latest w/ that option. Is there a config file I can edit to make that part of the default for the Applet TV preset? Als...

Severe blocking/pixelization on Apple TV w/ HB
I wish I'd caught this sooner rather than having to trash 44 ripped movies. Somewhere between 08 NOV and 12 NOV a change was made somewhere that's causing every movie I rip to have really bad blocking and pixelization at spots in movies, meaning at other times the picture is great. It's always the s...

Snow Leopard build issues w/ svn r2852
I had some issues with the latest update w.r.t. the libogg version being too low however was able to resolve it by installing the Snow Leopard version of XCode, zapping my build directory, and rerunning configure and make again. I also installed the latest libogg from macports. I don't know if all o...
