It's fairly poorly documented, unfortunately :(

Re: General question about audio bitrates

Not sure which interface to MediaInfo this is, but it's pretty useless… it doesn't show the channel count. But that 192 Kbps stream must be 2-channel.

It could be "Dolby Surround" (2 channels).

Re: General question about audio bitrates

IIRC AC-3 5.1 is encoded at 384 or 448 Kbps on the iTunes Store (just like on DVDs). With a codec like AC-3, encoding 5.1 at 192 Kbps will give you pretty bad audio quality in most cases. The bitrate ranges offered by HandBrake for AC-3 match those of the official Dolby encoder (or at least did when...

Or even the corresponding 1080p preset, it'll also work with all AppleTVs from version 2 onwards. But not the 1080p60 preset, you need the AppleTV 4K for 60fps, IIRC.

There are hardware-accelerated VP8 decoders around though. In any case, it's a better bet than Theora.

Re: Preset audio sample rate reverts to 48 kHz

Fwiw, all the built in presets set sample rates, and my own personal presets set it without issue so it may be localisation or not using the behaviours correctly. No, only five of them do (Vimeo-YouTube series), all others are "auto": https://github.com/HandBrake/HandBrake/blob/master/libhb/preset_...

Our AAC encoder is not very good. I suggest using AAC Passthru instead since your source is already in that format.

Assuming it is indeed a decoder bug, maybe the nightlies already have a fix for it: https://handbrake.fr/nightly.php

Re: copy:dts but which one?

Indeed, if my memory serves me right, MakeMKV does extract the DTS core substream to a separate track by default. In which case the second track is indeed the core substream. HandBrake's copy:dts will not pass DTS-HD tracks through by design. If you wanted to pass the full lossless stream through, t...

Re: copy:dts but which one?

That's just one track with 3 substreams. HandBrake doesn't do core-only extraction unless your source is a Blu-ray folder structure.

Yeah, stream types should be straightforward, keyframes probably a bit trickier. If I get started, maybe I can figure something out :)

Re: Which Mac is best for HEVC encoding?

If you're buying a machine that you will never use for anything other than video encoding, then indeed, you'll get more bang for your buck buying generic hardware. If you want a nice machine to use day to day, with the occasional encoding job on the side, a quad-core iMac (i.e. any but the base 21.5...

You'd want something like MakeMKV.
That won't work either, it makes MKV files, not straight rips.

Re: No valid Source when opening H.265 file

This does look like it might be our bug in the MPEG demuxer. Assuming it is indeed, should be fixable, but could you provide a short sample (just a few seconds) source for us to test? You can use Dropbox or similar.

Re: Storage size changed

The preset may have been configured for maximums of 720x480; Blu-Rays would go to 720xH because they use square pixels, whereas DVDs use not-square pixels and would always fit within 720 by 480, no height reduction needed.
