With upcoming changes to data protection and privacy laws in Europe coming into effect soon, we thought this would be a good time to remind everyone that we do have a privacy policy.
This applies to all users and visitors world-wide.

We have made a few changes to the language to make it clearer in relation to this new regulation but fundamentally, the terms and your rights are unchanged.

Re: The latest version will be compatible for 8 cores?

It all really depends on your encoding settings. You can also run multiple encodes at the same time, though unfortunately the interface requires you to launch multiple instances of HandBrake.

Re: Bizarre request - move letterbox black bars to bottom

We do have a padding filter now, so it should be possible. Haven't been keeping up with latest developments though, I'm not sure if it's exposed in the graphical user interface yet.

Re: How to select 5.1 audio over stereo?

One workaround would be to remove the Stereo track from the source before feeding it to HandBrake. Under macOS I'd use Subler, under Windows, not sure. Maybe Mkvtoolnix? It'll make a Matroska file, but since you're re-encoding it with HandBrake anyway, it's really a non-issue… https://mkvtoolnix.dow...

Use FFmpeg. HandBrake can only output 4:2:0

FLAC 16-bit for pcm_s16le, FLAC 24-bit for pcm_s24le -- both are lossless encoders.

Re: x265 file sizes increase after upgrade to 1.1.0

Looks like you're right, though for the "why" you'd have to ask x265 developers. But unless they screwed something up, chances are the extra bitrate gives you a small quality boost, too…

Re: Particularly slow enode

A 2:1 encode speed ratio using the same settings isn't that unexpected, my guess is the source file is particularly grainy (and widescreen instead of the typical "ultra-wide" cinema format, so there's about 30% more pixels to encode than for most movies).

But I have seen a number of logs pass through here where "forced only" was checked and nothing was found, but unchecking it allowed a track to be found.
Well if you see such logs again, please point them out to a developer, it would possibly/probably mean there's a bug somewhere :)

BTW Woodstock, this is a great example of how Foreign Audio Search + Forced Only works fine (in that packet count heuristics are used to determine the candidate) even though there are no forced subtitle packets anywhere in the input tracks ;)

Re: Foreign Audio Scan Only Works Sometimes

Threshold used to be 20%, but apparently it was causing issues and was modified a long time ago. Unfortunately the developer who pushed the change didn't document it in the source and I don't recall ever finding any related forum topic explaining it either.

According to this you may be able to get 64-bit install media from Microsoft (unless you somehow got a computer with a "starter" edition of Windows): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_7_editions

No idea how you'd do it, but surely help may be available elsewhere on the internet.

Re: Choppy Playback from Handbrake Exports

However, any output from Handbrake plays choppy / stutters. I know this is sometimes due to the player (in my case Quicktime) being underpowered. But lower resolution (720p) tests also play choppy. I am using Handbrake v1.1.0 on Windows. QuickTime for Windows is not just bad, it's really really rea...

Re: Cannot get CC or Subtitles to work

You don't want to use "forced only" when using the scan, because it rarely works in the real world. Scan by itself works with the "usual" method of forced subtitles being in their own track. …and here we go again. Foreign Audio Search (a.k.a. subtitle scan) should be combined with "Forced Only" (th...

Lastly, does ripping a 480p sourced DVD with 720p or 1080p presets add size to the file?
Maybe 1% larger if you're unlucky.

Re: Are the 1080p and 720p presets really pointless?

A CD and a DVD have the exact same size and shape, yet most people wouldn't confuse a CD with a DVD. Same with DVD and Blu-ray, they're different. There is no such thing as a "Blu-ray DVD" or a "DVD with a Blu-ray logo".

Re: Are the 1080p and 720p presets really pointless?

NTSC DVDs are 480p to begin with.

Using the 720p or 1080p presets won't hurt though, there just won't be any advantage to using them when the source is 480p. But using the 1080p preset means you can use the same preset for both DVD and Blu-ray sources, so it might be more convenient.

Re: Web Optimized: what does it mean?

The downside to having it on used to be that the whole file had to be rewritten after the encode (to move the index from the end to the start of the file), requiring additional free disk space on the output hard drive otherwise the encode would fail. Current versions of HandBrake reverse space at th...

Even the file command can make a sometimes reasonable guess as to the character encoding. Or if you want something with a graphical interface, maybe Smultron.

Not with HandBrake. It's only implemented for AC-3, and will therefore only be enabled if the source track is AC-3.
