Re: Mini PC for transcoding

Theoretically the Kaby Lake unit should have a "better" QSV encoder then the two Skylake options simply because every new generation Intel puts out has incremental improvements to their QSV engine. How much of a difference one generation to the next actually makes in practice I've no idea...

Re: PAL & NTSC

AFAIK this oscillation issue shouldn't happen at all on modern flat panel displays no matter what room lighting you're using, it's strictly a potential annoyance with old-school CRT monitors and TVs.

Re: PAL DVD, should I use 576p instead of 480p?

NTSC DVDs are 720x480, PAL DVDs are 720x576. Players stretch the video on playback to whichever aspect ratio its flagged as (either 4:3 or 16:9). PC-based player software might resize NTSC DVDs down to 640x480 for 4:3 video which is where that erroneous 640x480 DVD resolution you read comes from. Ju...

Re: Expected Frames

You say you couldn't copy the files onto your internal hard drive, to me that sounds as if there's something wrong with your external drive. Sounds like bad sectors causing read errors. What you need is to use a data recovery tool of some sort to get a copy of those video files off that external dri...

Re: Transcode Audio Only?

AVIdemux should do what you need, it can transcode audio while leaving the video stream as-is, and it's free. VideoRedo would also work and IIRC would be easier to set up a large batch job with, but it's NOT free (unless you can finish what you need done within the free trial period).

Re: Can HandBrake Rip 3D Blu-ray to non-3D MP4?

Technically Handbrake doesn't "rip" blu-rays at all as that would be the process of removing the DRM, but semantics aside if you feed Handbrake a 3D blu-ray to parse and encode it'll simply kick out one of the two sides as 2D video the same way some 3D blu-rays play in 2D in standalone pla...

Re: NVENC Hardware Encoding for H264 and H265

AS I mentioned earlier in this thread, the HEVC hardware is a nice curiosity but only present on the latest 900-series cards and really only half-baked at the moment. The lack of b-frames in HEVC encodes with the current hardware is a real showstopper, and while the current lacklustre software suppo...

Re: NVENC Hardware Encoding for H264 and H265

As far as I know, NVENC only supports constant QP encoding, it doesn't have any CRF-like rate control yet (unlike QSV which has ICQ and LA_ICQ). You're right, sorry it is using constant quant not constant RF. Just one more thing keeping my rudimentary testing from being a proper 100% apples-to-appl...

Re: NVENC Hardware Encoding for H264 and H265

I don't have current Intel hardware so I can't compare quality, although given that Intel's a few generations further along then Nvidia it wouldn't surprise me. I know my card with it's '2nd Gen Maxwell' architecture is supposed to be better then the NVENC found on the older Kepler and original Maxw...

Re: NVENC Hardware Encoding for H264 and H265

I've been doing some testing recently on my GTX960 using a command line tool that's been floating around for a few months now (NVEncC). At present software support for NVENC isn't where it would need to be to get me to use it regularly, but as soon as better tools come along it'll be quite a compell...

Re: It's hard to be a newbie - PAL to NTSC

It's not about region locking, it's about formatting. In my experience Sony players in North America have always been very picky about only playing NTSC content even if the disc itself is actually marked region-free, making the ham-fisted assumption that anything PAL would not have come from a legit...

Re: NVidia NVENC Support

As an owner of a shiny new GTX 960 I'd be very interested in seeing this added, but realistically I doubt it'll happen any time soon (if ever) for reasons others have already stated above. I'd really just like to dig up SOMETHING to do my own comparison tests of NVENC vs x264 and x265, but the only ...

Re: VCD to MP4

There should be a way, the video itself would be just standard MPEG-1 (or MPEG-2 for SVCDs) although Handbrake wouldn't have any code to nicely parse the VCD/SVCD file structure for titles and chapters the way it does DVDs or Blu-rays. Push comes to shove drag & drop the basic video files off a ...

Re: .srt subtitle file won't soft-burn subs but hard burns instead

IIRC Handbrake switched the MP4 muxer under the hood sometime last year and the new muxer can't handle inserting text subtitles into an MP4 container (yet?), and also the ability to burn-in text format subtitles was added somewhere along the way as well. The up-shot, old Handbrake could not burn in ...

That's to do with the maximum H.264 Profile and Level that the projector is designed to support. On HB's video tab you'll see towards the bottom a pair of drop-down boxes where you can specify what H.264 Profile and H.264 Level to use. A 20Mbps max bitrate with support for no more then 4 reference f...

There's a button with a stylized '3D' label on it between and just to the left of the 'Open BD Folder' button and the chapters list, at least there is on the screenshot on the webpage there. If I remember correctly that'll open up a dialog box with the 3D options you're looking for. It's been a whil...

Re: 3d blu ray sbs ?

Handbrake can't convert 3D blu-rays to SBS. It doesn't have the code necessary to interpret the 3D extension to the BD spec, ie HB would only be able to see one of the two sides when loading up a 3D blu-ray title because there's no way for it to know about the other. The only software I know of off ...

Re: Mpeg2 to h.265 Settings

Well the x265 encoder handbrake uses is still quite new, very much a work in progress meant primarily for testing. You might try a test encode using the much more mature x264 encoder also in Handbrake just to see if it's a problem with the source or with x265. There's going to be quite a bit of furt...

Re: Mpeg2 to h.265 Settings

There is a significant difference between deinterlace-bob and decomb-bob. Deinterlace-bob (what you appear to have used) will perform a simple bob on each field while decomb-bob will do a smart bob which should give better quality. If you want ~60fps output then decomb-bob is what you want for best ...

I'd suggest making sure output is set to variable framerate then play around a bit with filter combinations on a short segment (eg 'detelecine on, decomb off' or 'detelecine off, decomb on' and etc.), see what you get. If someone who knows better then I sees something wrong in what I'm about to say ...

Re: Handbrake Deinterlace - What Really Happens

Yeah I highly doubt this one specific use case (tricking youtube into allowing 60fps) is going sway the developers into allowing upscaling in the GUI, nor should it as the main reason that upscaling is currently blocked (to keep people who don't really know what they're doing from doing something st...

Re: What AAC 5.1 bitrate is reasonable

Well I look at it this way: 5.1 surround has 6 channels. That would be comparable to 3 pairs of 2 channel audio. What bitrate would you be happy with using for simple 2-channel stereo? Triple it and use that for 5.1 surround, or the closest you can get. Happy with 128kpbs stereo? 384kbps surround sh...
