Encoding for iPad 2 and effects on battery life
John Gruber of Daring Fireball, a noted blog, posted a review of the iPad 2 on March 9, 2011 stating that his battery drained faster when using a Handbrake encode compared to movies from iTunes. He says (emphasis mine): I believe the reason The Empire Strikes Back drained more battery life than the ...

Re: HandBrake 0.9.5 Discussion Thread
I have been told that ATV2 does support soft subtitles (which can be turned on/off/selected). The way these are coded by HB are different from what ATV2 expects, hence still only burned in subtitles work. The question then of course is: how should these be encoded for iTunes/ATV2 to recognize them?...

Will encodes for the ATV1 work on the ATV2?TedJ wrote:Encodes for the ATV2 will not work on the ATV1.
Sorry, had to be asked. I have an ATV1 and probably will get an ATV2, but the thought of reencoding all of my mp4s makes me faint.

Re: AppleTV Custom Presets - 0.9.4
Well, after being away from the forums for a while, I rashly downloaded a nightly build last week (r3678) and encoded a DVD chapter for the first-gen Apple TV. The result froze the device, and naturally, the problem was that b-pyramid wasn't turned off. So once I learned this fact, I figured now wou...

Subler is great, but I would rather see HB keep the existing timed-text track across MP4 re-encodes.Ritsuka wrote:On mac you can use Subler too.

Re: Carry over timed-text track in MP4 re-encodes
mp4box is quicker, but HB doing it natively is the fastest.kneeslasher wrote:Can QT Pro solve this for you? Open original file, Apple-J, copy sub track, open converted file, paste, save?
(I have ... a lot... of 6-7 minute classic cartoons. I'd get CTS doing the QT route.)

Carry over timed-text track in MP4 re-encodes
I've got a bunch of high-quality encodes via HB that have, as part of the original DVD->MP4 process, a timed-text track from the DVD's CC track. When I reencode those MP4s to an iPhone (and, hopefully, iPad) target, the timed-text tracks aren't carried over -- they don't appear in the subtitles area...

Re: iPad encode testing
Considering that they (tx3g timed text subtitles) do work on the iPhone, I would suspect they also work on the iPad (though having confirmation is never a bad thing). Whoops. I had misunderstood the whole thing. I see now that timed text does work, and my workflow is basically: 1. Use mp4box to ext...

Re: iPad encode testing
Hi Kem, Can you do me a great big favor and check the movie playback settings on your iPad, and tell me what it says specifically for subtitles or closed captions support? Subtitles and "closed captions" are two different/separate things, so it would be very, very helpful to me if you coul...

Re: Utility to extract only CC text and create SRT?
kogyaru, the only tool that I can think of is CCExtractor: http://ccextractor.sourceforge.net/ - nto sure whether it does what you want or not. Thanks for the pointer. Using a Mac binary, this tool wasn't able to read from a DVD device or understand what to do with files inside a VIDEO_TS folder. I...

Re: Can't cancel scan after RCE Region Protection error
Re: problem unchecking "use libdvdnav", I had to use Property List Editor to manually add the UseDvdNav preference entry as a boolean, and leave it unchecked, before that would work.

Re: Can't cancel scan after RCE Region Protection error
I'm definitely unable to uncheck the "Use libdvdnav" box in the prefs on my other Mac, which is a MacBook running 10.6.2 and HB 64-bit r3154 (same as my Mac Mini). I've unchecked it, then restarted, then relaunched HB, and it's still checked. Something's not triggering. Doesn't matter if I...

Re: Bug in libhb/dvdnav.c
What are the symptoms of this bug? Given that I cannot find the original author's first and rejected post, and cannot tell what the reported symptoms of the bug are, I wonder if the bug is related to what I'm experiencing with dvdnav (0.9.4 and r3154): it makes HB hangs every time on a certain track...

Re: Can't cancel scan after RCE Region Protection error
That was the trick-- I wasn't using libdvdread. Now the problematic DVD scans all the way through in r3154. If I enable dvdnav, HB bombs in the same place. Also, I tried a few times to unset that "use libdvdnav (instead of libdvdread)" checkbox in the prefs, and at least once even a clean ...

Re: Can't cancel scan after RCE Region Protection error
Sure. Thanks for the tip about the title-specific open option. Missed it by a country mile... Anyway, here you go, the log for 0.9.3 scanning a VIDEO_TS folder on disk. Titles 22 and 23 are the problematic ones. In 0.9.4 and later they cause the hang, whilst 0.9.3 sails through. Note that the top of...

Utility to extract only CC text and create SRT?
Well, at first I thought it was weird that there was no video passthrough in HB, so I could just extract the CC text from a given title and have a very small .mp4 file containing just the timed-text track -- which I could then convert to SRT later using mp4box, saving me oodles of time vs. re-encodi...

Re: Can't cancel scan after RCE Region Protection error
It appears HB 0.9.3 works fine-- the problematic tracks are skipped over, and the scan finishes. However, I lose the ability to capture the CC track that 0.9.4 gives me, so I'm still kind of defeated...

Re: Can't cancel scan after RCE Region Protection error
I tried folder view (that is, selecting the DVD's VIDEO_TS folder rather than the DVD itself) and got the same problem -- couldn't make "Cancel Scan" work. I repeated the case with libdvdread, by unchecking the libdvdnav default in preferences; same thing. I did extract the DVD using Fairm...

[Fixed] Can't cancel scan after RCE Region Protection error
Greetings, Using 64-bit r3154 on Mac OS X 10.6.2 and VLC 1.0.2 (also 64-bit). I'm unable to make HB stop its DVD scan (42 tracks, FYI; it's a compilation DVD) after it encountered an RCE Region Protection. That is, when I click on the big red "stop" icon in HB, nothing doing. No change. I ...

Re: Run HandBrake CLI on Apple TV
The non-smartass answer is that the HB CLI client needs to be compiled using OS X 10.4.9 (IIRC) frameworks if it's to run on an Apple TV. That explains the error you see. The Apple TV does run mighty hot, though. Peg its CPU to the nines with HB and it will turn incandescent. Good for an extra light...

Well, I figured it out: older versions of MP4Box didn't recognize the 'sbtl' handler type, only 'text'. 0.4.6 (CVS) does.

Re: Can Closed Captions be preserved, transcoding MP4 to MP4
I'm in a bit of a snit. I want to extract captions, as the OP did -- but for the express purpose of converting the .tx3g file to SRT. I don't necessarily need it all done in one shot. I'm happy to extract the specific ttxt track, then convert it using whatever. I am having trouble figuring out how t...

Hiya awk, I've just applied your patch to the 503 rev, and it applied fine with one hunk failing (deca52.c). jbrjake mentioned he fixed that. The patch correctly reads in VOB files, either named .vob or .mpg, but it doesn't seem to work with SVCD .mpg files. I'm interested in that as I've got a cons...
