Re: *** AppleTV 3 and the New iPad (Presets) ***

I find I usually don't notice much difference at RF 22 vs RF 20, unless I'm pixel peeping on my 27" iMac. Nonetheless I usually encode at 20. :P For 720p I might go as low as 19, but now that my ATV2 supports 1080p, I'll just stick with 1080p whenever possible. 10 GB is big, but flash memory is...

High Profile Level 4.0 1080p H.264 on Apple TV 2

I probably won't have time to test this out for several days, but I wouldn't be surprised if High Profile 1080p will also *now* work with the ATV2 running the latest version of the OS. I already had success playing full-bitrate Blu-ray rips on the ATV2 via XBMC, but the stock OS/player stuttered. S...

Re: Subtitle problem (only one line) on Ipad

I've noticed this before too with some MKV files, and yes my solution was also to add in a separate srt file for the subs in the Subtitles tab in Handbrake before the encode. This was on 0.9.5 MacGUI. I don't know if this issue still exists with the 698 nightly, because I haven't used it much... obv...

For 720p, I like video bit rates of around 3.5 - 5 Mbps

I haven't been using any of the nightlies, just the 0.9.5 release, so my comments are based on that alone. Also, I watch some of the stuff on a 2560x1440 27 iMac (which is 4X 720p), and on a 720p projector. I've been encoding everything at 720p, since that's what my AppleTV 2 supports, and it also w...

Re: Will the SnowLeopard architectural changes affect Handbrake?

Well, for one thing, 10.6 Snow Leopard won't even run on PowerPC, to my surprise. (I was expecting Apple to drop PowerPC with 10.7 Garfield, in 2011.) I note that the current version of Handbrake supports only 10.5 Leopard. If the Handbrake guys find some sort of cool whiz-bang feature or whatever i...

Multi-core, multi-queue, and memory leaks.

I've also notice a very interesting abnormality --- there were times when even though handbrake was using less than 400%, but the system appeared bogged down and I expreienced severe unresponsiveness. E.g. I click on the menu bar in the Finder, it doesn't register the click instantaneously. This is...

Re:

Well what I've always heard is that A: it should be used on black and white movies to get rid of a green tinge and/or rainbow-colored shimmering, and that B: grayscale encoding, or at least the way it works in HB, has no affect on x264. All HB's grayscale option does it to remove the U and V planes...

2 GHz G5 is many times slower than low end Intel Mac

For reference, I tested my MacBook against my iMac G5 a couple of years ago. My MacBook Core Duo 2.0 was around 3-5X as fast as my iMac G5 2.0 in Handbrake depending on the settings. Also for reference, my iBook G4 1.07 has problems even playing back the 2.5 Mbps H.264 encodes I make for my iPhone (...

Please add to FAQ

Thanks for the info. Perhaps you can add this to the Picture Settings FAQ? Also, is there any significant overlap in the functionality of denoise and deblock? The FAQ describes blocking as one of the artifacts denoise corrects. BTW, up until now (years) I have not used any of these filters for encod...

Re: Anamorphic question, a few DVD's behave differently

Is Handbrake 0.9.2 just misreporting the source and output resolution here? Or am I just misunderstanding how the data should be read? This is Sling Blade, a letterboxed (presumably) 640x480 title, with my "Strict" anamorphic setting chosen (because that's part of my own personal preset), ...

Re: VFR rip of Ratatouille fails. QT says "incorrect duration"

Oops missed that. You're right, it doesn't make sense that it would work. But nonetheless the VFR encodes work in 1477. Weird. I just tried it again, with the same preset and VFR checked. And I tried 0.9.2 about 5 times using different anamorphic and picture settings. Regardless of the other ...

I see. Indeed it was. svn1477 corrects the problem.

VFR rip of Ratatouille fails. QT says "incorrect duration"

This has been replicated by me several times now, and by btm . Ratatouille's 1st chapter will get ripped to an unreadable file by HandBrake... but only if VFR is active. Turn off VFR and it's totally fine. As btm has suggested, this could be due to Ratatouille's copy protection I suppose, but then a...

Re: Post Your "Best Settings" here and Why.

If you guys have a reproducible issue with VFR please start a new thread or a bug report for it instead of clogging up the Best Settings thread. And please. Include activity logs. I don't have this particular DVD so unfortunately I can't test. I am aware of one minor issue with VFR that I'm working...

VFR can cause problems

My gut feeling is that it has to do with the copy protection on the first chapter of a track. If I just encode that one chapter using nightstrms settings it gives me the error in the resulting mp4. Turning off VFR seemed to have resolved the problem but I really have no idea why. Has anyone run int...

I am pretty sure the limit is not related to a bug in Handbrake but a limitation of QuickTime/AppleTV/FrontRow to read a video file larger than 4GB. There also might be a limit in the MP4 spec to GB but I am less sure of that. I have a 7.2 GB QT file that plays fine in QuickTime. I can't export it ...

Cool. I'll have to beta test this as well next month, when the 360 update lands.

Too bad QuickTime doesn't have support for it yet though.
