WMV->MP4 encodes crashing in 0.9.3

I have some WMV movies I'm trying to convert to MP4 using the Universal preset in HB 0.9.3 and HB keeps crashing. Here's the encode log for one of them: HandBrake Activity Log for /Volumes/Movies/HeliFreak/Atom 500/electronics.m4v: 2008-11-27 07:53:13 -0600 Handbrake Version: 0.9.3 (2008112300) [07:...

Re: Problem with Star Wars Episode V and AC-3 audio

OK, thanks. I'll try re-encoding when 0.9.3 comes out.

Was a potential solution for this issue ever found? I haven't even seen it acknowledged by any of the moderators.

Re: Problem with Star Wars Episode V and AC-3 audio

Same here. I'm using the Apple TV preset and the only change I'm making is to enable 2-pass encoding. I went back and just encoded chapter 3. You'll see many similarities to roundy's post. Here's the first part of the activity log for that one chapter: [08:49:50] hb_init: checking cpu count [08:49:5...

Re: A simple thanks

Let me add my accolades. I just got my new Apple TV hooked up last night and, after re-associating the optical audio port on my AV receiver with an input that supports Dolby Digital, I played the first part of "Star Wars: A New Hope", which I had re-ripped with HB 0.9.2. One word: WOW!! I ...

Re: Some DVD rips are choppy

What deinterlace settings are you using? If you're using the fastest option, it's known not to do a very good job and can make the video look like it's skipping frames. Try a slower option.

Unfortunately, if you limit the number of threads to 1, you'll only be using one of the cores, which means that the encode may take as much as twice as long.

I know the PowerPC version of HB handled my copy of Attack of the Clones just fine without first ripping the DVD to disk. Are you running on a PowerPC or Intel Mac? It seems that the Intel version of HB has more issues than the PowerPC version.

Unless the Limewire movies are coming across as DVD VIDEO_TS folders, you cannot use HandBrake to encode them.

It makes no sense to rip at 720p when you start with 480p source material; you can't add picture information that isn't there in the first place. Use the Apple TV preset and let the TV do the upscaling.

As for 720p source material, HandBrake is not designed to rip it.

if you're getting a .exe, it sounds like you're downloading the Windows version.

I'll bet you'll also find that the audio dropped out at the point where the rip speed dropped:

Try changing the file extension from "mp4" to "m4v". That should give you a chapter menu in QT.

I believe that the new beta of HandBrake requires 10.4 or later.

Not automatically. However, you can enable the queue (check box at the bottom), add them manually, and then click Start. The titles will then encode in the order you added them to the queue.

2.04GB sounds about in the right ballpark. I encode mine at 2500 kbps and a 2-hour movie is typically around 2.2GB.

I would suggest using the built-in presets, although if you want to decrease the bitrate to 2000 you probably won't see too much of a degradation.

How big was the resultant file? There's an issue with HB where it fails the multiplexing process if the movie is over 4 GB in size.

I've had problems with one of the two DVDs mounted on my PowerMac G4 not showing up. A more user-friendly alternative to using the CLI is to select "DVD Folder / Image" and then select the disc's VIDEO_TS folder.

Your receiver will not decode AAC 5.1 and I don't think you'll find any receivers that will. Unless you want to hack your Apple TV, go with DPL2.
