thanks, that sounds like it could help - it does seem to be worse when it's slightly grainy footage of an otherwise plain smooth surface. a lot of the sets for star trek next generation episodes cause this. i'll try re-encoding some clips of stuff i've already done so i can compare the two.

yeh, i'd definitely be looking at overheating install SpeedFan (it's free, google it) and monitor system temps. if you configure it correctly you can make it save a log of system temperatures as they are monitored, so you'll see exactly how hot the components get before it freezes. my money is on CP...
