Not to bump my own thread, but it looks like this issue (and a possible fix in progress) are addressed in the Mac support forum, here:

Looks like the problem is with HB's inability to support 8-bit audio.

I record home videos using a compact digital camera that encodes to .MOV QuickTime files.
