PS3 and ATV universal settings

Postby Kurtz » Wed Jul 18, 2007 10:58 pm

Hey Thanks for looking In

From doing some searching this topic has been covered a bit already, however was never really tested or confirmed.
What i want is a setting/preset that will work for both Apple TV and the PS3.
the previous discussion came up with this string

level=41:bframes=3:ref=1:subme=5:me=umh:no-fast-pskip=1:trellis=2

Its the ATV string with the PS3 setting on the front.

So far this has worked on the PS3 i have at home. But i don't have an Apple TV to test. If anyone out there has a free moment or two to test out a couple of movies (or just chapters) with this string on their Apple TV just so I know for sure it works.

Thank you very much for any help.

EDIT: Changed string as it was incorrect.

Itunes test

Postby Kurtz » Tue Jul 24, 2007 12:34 am

As no one had time I found a way to test a movies compatibility

Added it to Itunes and asked it to convert to Appletv

Itunes responded by saying it could not because the file was already in the correct format.

problem solved
Hope that helps some people

I noticed that the string here is different to the one on the version of handbrake I have. The ATV string is:

bframes=3:ref=1:subme=5:me=umh:no-fast-pskip=1:no-dct-decimate=1:trellis=2

Should the no-dct-decimate=1 be there or not? If so the string should be

level=41:bframes=3:ref=1:subme=5:me=umh:no-fast-pskip=1:no-dct-decimate=1:trellis=2

Postby Kurtz » Tue Aug 07, 2007 10:07 pm

Hey
Your correct. it seems to be a new addition thats not in the wiki. I shall make a new preset and see if it has any effect on PS3 playback.

Thanks for letting me know, ill post back asap

NEw preset for ATV and PS3

Postby Kurtz » Tue Aug 07, 2007 11:09 pm

Hey

So this new addition seems to work fine on the PS3 and according to Itunes the ATV.

also the new setting seems to have better picture quality than the previous one. but might just be me wanting the best from the new.

Again ill ask, if anyone has an apple TV could they check a chapter using this string/method and see if the hardware accepts it.

Thanks for letting me know things had changed.

Constant quality

If thats the case why is it in a preset that uses Average bitrate?

We realized it after release, it is removed from the preset string in our svn.

Basically, the x264 options and the presets (especially the atv one) were the last thing we added right before release. So, they have a few flaws hence the "b1" in 0.8.5b1 :)
