VLC Problem

Postby fpetro » Mon Feb 09, 2009 2:20 am

I just downloaded 0.9.3. On several movies, Handbrake asks me to downloand and intall VLC. I downloaded and installed VLC. I quit Handbrake and restarted my computer. I tried the movie again. I was asked to download and install VLC in the applications folder. I checked the applications folder and verified that the lates version of VLC was there. Handbrake seems to be having a problem finding the software. I went back to the website and tried to download 0.9.2. Apparently that sofware is no longer available. Does anyone know where I can get a copy of 0.9.2? Does anyone know why Handbrake cannot find the VLC software?

You've downloaded VLC, but have you actually opened it yet? I presume you're on OS X, which won't allow access to the bundled libdvdcss until you've approved the app with Leopard's security watchdog.

If this doesn't resolve your issue, please post an activity log as outlined here.

Moving to Mac, as this is not a bug.

As justed, I opened the VLC program. The program opened without a problem. I then inserted one of the movies that gave me the problem. Handbrake again asked that I install VLC. Below is a copy of the activity log.

VLC needs to be in /Applications, not ~/Applications or any other folder.

I have tried with VLC in both locations, same results. I even tried launching VLC before Handbrake, still no luck.

You are running VLC 0.9.8 aren't you? not the older 0.8.6?

Yes, I am running 0.9.8. I did another experiment. I have an external drive I use for emergencies. This has a stripped down version of OS X 10.5 with all the latest updates. I have installed Tech Tools 5.0, Disk Warrior 4.1, Handbrake 0.9.3 and VLC 0.9.8. All other software is directly from Apple. I booted on this external drive and tried Handbrake again. Same results. So this should elminate any software conflicts with other software on my computer.

I had a similar problem; this is how I seem to have fixed it. (I'm not a techie so I hope you understand my layman's gibberish!) The VCL "Read Me" file says: When you download VLC media player, you will end up with a VLC-0.9.x.dmg file. Double-click to open this file. An icon will now appear on your Desktop, right beside your drive(s). Open it and drag the VLC application from the resulting window to the place where you want to install it. Most often this is the directory Applications on your main harddrive.

So, I dragged the whole vic-0.9.8 icon that appeared on the desktop into the Applications folder and Handbrake would not recognize it. I tried opening it, as was suggested on this site, but Handbrake would still not recognize it. I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but no luck. I looked at the Applications list again, to make sure that VLC was moved to the Applications folder, and noticed that under "Kind" the VLC-0.9.8 was listed as "Alias." I moved it back to the desktop, opened it, and moved only the application portion (the one with the while and orange pylon icon) back into Applications. Handbrake now opens it automatically.

Hope this helps.

Thanks that seems to have worked. I guess I shot myself in the foot. I put VLC and the documentation in a folder in the Applications folder. That must have caused the problem. I moved VLC out of the folder, left the documentation in the folder. All seems to be working now.
Now that I have the answer it is obvious. Guess I couldn't see the forrest due to all the trees in the way.

Thanks.
