0.9.3 works - 0.9.4 fails with dvdnav_sector_search error

Post by derek8187 »

I have an issue where 0.9.3 works with no problems at all but 0.9.4 creates a 4K blank file for every "rip".

My environment is as follows :

Machine - MacBook Pro Intel Core Duo ( please note : 32bit chip ), OS - Snow Leopard 10.6.2 (Build 10C540), VLC - 1.0.3 Golden Eye (32bit), Handbrake - 0.9.4 (32bit), RipIt - 1.3.3

I have been successfully backing up my DVD library for many months now using Handbrake 0.9.3 on ".dvdmedia" files generated by RipIt. I have recently upgraded to 0.9.4 and now every single movie generates a blank 4K movie (settings seem irrelevant - my 'default' on 0.9.3 has been Apple TV at 62% constant quality with 'passthru' as second audio track, on 0.9.4 I selected the 'out-of-the-box' Apple TV preset with no changes).

Strangely - In 0.9.4 the new 10 second 'Live Preview' functionality appears to work so it must be able to see the movie correctly (I assume!).

I downgraded to 0.9.3 ( obtained application from VideoHelp web site ) and this still works OK so I do have a usable solution. I would however like to use 0.9.4 I have looked through various forum posts and searches on google but do not seem to find a solution that corresponds to my problem so any help would be appreciated.

Many Thanks !

The 'activity log' for a 0.9.4 blank rip is always similar to the following (first 13 lines are repeated for each title - last one only shown) :

It sounds like RipIt has found a new way to screw up rips. HandBrake 0.9.4 uses an new library for reading dvd's that more closely resembles how a real dvd player navigates a dvd. You can use the other older method by disabling dvdnav in advanced preferences. You must restart handbrake for the change to take effect.

Thanks JohnAStebbins for the prompt reply !

I can confirm that by de-selecting the "Dvd-Video - Use libdvdnav (instead of libdvdread)" option, Handbrake 0.9.4 has now started to encode and I assume (in 4 hours time) will correctly have created the rip.

Many Thanks !
