Forced Captions not burning in

Postby iSAWaUFO » Sat Oct 31, 2009 7:52 pm

svn2845 x86_64 (2009092801)
I have this DVD which has some forced captions at 12 mins into the movie.
I try to burn in the forced captions but they do not appear in the movie playback.

Re: Forced Captions not burning in

Postby JohnAStebbins » Sat Oct 31, 2009 8:09 pm

Did you select the "forced" option for the subtitle in the UI? If so, try unchecking it. The descriptor that causes the display of "(Forced Caption)" in the name of the subtitle is a separate thing from the flags that the "forced" option looks for. If the forced option is checked and the subtitle doesn't have the forced flags, then you would get no subtitles in the output.

I got it to work. I was selecting the wrong subtitle track, (see illustration)

Image

If I selected "English (Forced Caption) - (Bitmap)" I got no captions.
When I selected "Foreign Audio Search - (Bitmap) I get the captions for the non-English phrases.
Checking "Forced Only", for the track, makes no difference.

My intuitive grasp of the subtitle descriptions was wrong.
I don't understand what "Foreign Audio Search" refers to, but in this case it means burn in the English captions for the non-English dialog.

Finding the correct subtitle track and determining whether you need to select "forced" can be tricky. It is often not obvious which is the correct choice. That's why we created the "Foreign Audio Search" option. It adds an extra pass to the encode process to scan all the subtitles that match your selected native language (set in preferences). If it finds a match that has either the forced flag set or has a very low frequency of subtitles, it assumes it is for foreign dialog (i.e. non-english dialog in your case).

I wasn't aware of that. That truly is a pretty slick addition. Thanks guys.

It's actually been in the code for a long time. But until recently it was designated with the less that descriptive name "subtitle-scan" or simply "Auto". We tried to pick a name that better describes what it does.
