Handbrake squeezes my video to less than 4:3

Postby kosta » Wed Oct 28, 2009 3:09 pm

I tried to rip some video from a DVD I made myself, The video is originally in 4:3 and when I ripped it to avi file it squeezes the video to less than 4:3 width, the height stays the same though, I can't figure out why this happens, here is the activity report.
Any help would be appreciated,
Thanks

What application are you using to play back the encoded video? It looks like whatever it is you're using is failing to honour the PAR information in the encode.

Try playing the encodes in VLC, or switch anamorphic to "none" in the picture settings.

Moving to Windows, as the Ponies forums are for feature requests only.

Is there a specific reason why you're resizing the video here (-w 640), if possible it's always better to encode in the original size, IE the original 352x480 instead of 640x864? Rescaling height is always more dangerous than rescaling width and here you're doing both.

However it should still look correct, the aspect ratio listed looks OK so I agree with TedJ that your player must be ignoring the aspect ratio. I see that you encoded to avi (note that this will not be supported in 0.9.4 for various good reasons), I'd suggest encoding to mp4 or mkv output since aspect ratio is better supported there, or use a better player.

If you must use avi and/or can't get PAR to work you would have to encode it to anamorphic: none, 640x480 gives you the right output resolution without rescaling the height.

What I am trying to do is rip a DVD that I made in 4:3 and edit it in Windows Movie Maker, that's why I need an avi file, then I'm trying to burn it, it comes out OK in WMM, it's just that when I burn it, it comes out thinner than 4:3.

I will try out your suggestions though.
