Enabling B-Frames and Packed Bitsttream in AVIs

Postby Balloon » Sat Sep 20, 2008 12:05 am

First I would love to see an option to increase the number of B-Frames for mpeg4-codecs (ffmpeg and xvid). They are currently set to zero.
And second: what about Packed-Bitstream Avi-Files?

The latter: No, and HandBrake will never support that. Very little thought has been given to the AVI container, quite honestly, because it is a hacked-abonimation-from-hell that is outclassed by virtually *any* other container and is showing its age quite badly (in fact, the need for packed bitstreams is a prime example of this - every other container supports VFR natively).

WOW, your ignorance is amazing!

XVID: the most popular internet sharing standard in the world and supported by most devices is AVI container, MPEG-4 SP or ASP codec and MP3. Anyone who thinks a Xvid is a fail is blinded by their own igonrance. Best Xvid quality comes from MPEG-4 ASP L5, 1 intra 2 bi and QPEL. Make it happen captain!

s/sharing/piracy/g ;)

The preferred codecs/containers for people in the "scene" are hardly a ringing endorsement... these are the same people who noise reduce virtually all the detail out of a film so they can compress it down to 700MB to burn on CD. Who even buys CD's any more?

This argument is irrelevant in any case - xvid and avi have been dropped from the upcoming 0.9.4 release (for sound reasons, from a development standpoint) and will not be coming back. If your preferred encodes are xvid avi's, then Handbrake is no longer the tool for you.

While most people agree rhester's ignorance is amazing (in some circles it has been reported to be legendary), about AVI he is correct.

It gets tiring when the only argument I see on any forum that bolsters AVI's usefulness is 'sharing'. If 'sharing' is your only requirement, Handbrake is not the tool for you. It's analogous to using a 5 pound sledge when driving a finishing nail into oak crown molding. There are much cruder tools out there to enable the 'sharing' you so avidly cite as being the cornerstone of Handbrake needing to continue to support such encoding methods.

I would attempt to show you and your opinions more respect, but I figured if you could come onto a developer's forum and, after 2 whole posts, completely throw caution to the wind and insult a dev, I am at least entitled to do the same.

Happy Halloween folks.

There are actually 2000 year old stone carvings that were recently unearthed in Egypt showing quite clearly groups of worshipers kneeling before RHester's ignorance. Thus the usage of the term legendary. However, they were desperate to losslessly convert from Hieroglyphics to the much more widely supported and upcoming Latin, and therefore bowed before him as a showing of respect. And, yes, there was that one [Censored] who was angry that the devs refused to keep supporting Sanskrit.
