Xbox 360 not working with 0.9.2

Postby mleejr » Fri Aug 22, 2008 4:01 am

Using instructions off of;
http://www.8bitjoystick.com/archives/ja ... on_mp4.php

Doesn't work.

Using the preset xbox 360 setting doesn't work.

No combination I do seems to work.

Can someone tell me an mp4 combo that works?

Some arent loading, some I change extension before it sees it, some I get this error "80-C00DF242".
What the hell?!

You'll probably be asked to read the pink box.

I'll disregard the lack of a log in this case, since it wouldn't have indicated the problem. The issue is with the ffmpeg encoder in 0.9.2, which is incorrectly idenitfied as FMP4 rather than DX50. It's been fixed in the development snapshot.

Rather than slavishly following the advice on the linked page, have you tried the Xbox 360 preset?

Thank you Ted for your answer. It was very 'non stock' ;)

As for the dude with the stock answer of 'read the pink' I have. I've googled, read here, everything. Tested a bunch. I've been pulling my hair out.

I've been trying everything. The problem is, I've done like 15 so far and had one work. The problem is, it didnt appear to be working so I moved on, then it worked (I think maybe I changed the extension) so I can't remember the settings (because I was testing new settings). It might have been the default xbox 360 setting. I set one to run like that last night just to test. The problem is, I would like mp4 because it is SO SO SO much faster.

I'll try the development snapshot. Is there a way to fix it in the version I have? Maybe a config setting or replace a codec?
Thanks for you help with this Ted,
Mike

PS: Sorry I didn't include a log. I'm not at my machine but I will when I get home.

I've been looking through the code and code docs and the level of knowledge is way out of reach. The problem is, the docs say 'wait until the next release'. Is there a nightly or snapshot build? I didn't see it. Also, can I just roll back to 0.9.1 and get it to work? I see the link to previous versions.
Thanks,
Mike

Thank you very much dynafly. I've downloaded the snapshot and it looks like its working (well, close). It is finally encoding on mp4 (ffmpeg) and working on the xbox. It is VERY studdery so I'm checking what's wrong. I'm using mp3 encoding. Sometimes...well...a lot of the time, the audio choices switch from the entire list to just MP3 or AC3? I don't know if it's studdering cuz of mp3 or network bandwidth. I have a 10/100 mbps switched, wired ethernet network in my house so that shouldn't be a problem. I'm doing another encode now that, for some reason, has an AAC option and not just mp3 or ac3. I'm using 44/128 encoding instead of 48/160 also to ease processing on the xbox. The 'muxing' is occuring now and taking a while. The encoding was pretty fast (14 mins). Either way, at least I can see something on my xbox 360 now. I will keep updating this thread until I find the best/right combination that works for my fellow xbox 360 users and post the final solution.

Now I'm confused.

Why would a problem with ffmpeg matter when encoding with x264?

Or were you just telling us the preset didn't work when in fact you weren't using it?

Couldn't get squat to work.
It's CLOSER now but I get skipping, serious lag then this error '69-80070057' after a few minutes. Apparently, I am not even close to alone.

viewtopic.php?f=7&t=4229&p=39220#p39220

Has anyone actually gotten this to work on their xbox 360 using mp4? If so, it doesn't sound like anyone else has.
Thx,
Mike

Because this is what I'm trying to do. I want to use mp4. I have to rename the file from mp4 to avi to get it to even come up on the xbox 360 video list. I'm not using the H.264 preset because it takes forever and I would like to get the mp4 to work. I have to check the preset again. I've tried so much that I think the H.264 preset may have been the only thing to work. The defaults took hours with the defaults though.
It doesn't sound like anyone has gotten mp4 to work. If they have, I would appreciate a solution.
Thx,
Mike

Please don't assume...

I would advise you to:

1. Donwload the snapshot build
2. Encode using the Xbox360 Preset (Don't change a thing)
3. If it doesn't work (don't know why not) then report back here with an Activity Log.

.mp4 play fine on the 360...as long as you don't include an 5.1 AAC track.

Thanks. I have used the default. It may be fine but it is using H.264. I want to use mp4 (ffmpeg or xvid). It is MUCH faster. The defaults can take like 4 or more hours compared to 15 or fewer minutes with mp4. I've used many audio combinations such as aac (like you said not to use), mp3, ac3 of variying bit depths, etc. How do I turn on the logs? I looked and didn't see any. I've had more success using no anomorphic but it still skips.

I am using the latest snapshot thanks to a previous poster.
I am getting similar results to everyone else. I gave the thread link on my previous post.
viewtopic.php?f=7&t=4229&p=39220#p39220

It appears to do ok but as soon as you pause, ff or rw, it skips heavy and eventually gives that error I noted above.

Thanks,
Mike

Dude - I don't understand what is the big problem playing on xbox 360...this is what you should do :-
1.) Download and install Handbrake SVN1477
2.) When encoding the DVD to play on xbox 360, choose encoder as Mpeg-4 (xvid) . In the audio section you can choose audio coded as AC3 if you want the 5.1 channel.
3.) Save as file type *.avi instead of *.mp4

The above settings should work perfectly fine on xbox 360.

Stupid question here...

Instead of step 2 can you select H.264? I tried the above, using the H.264 as the encoder and file type of .avi and left everything else default for the xbox360 profile...

I get a codec error on my xbox360 when running from my QNAP NAS Twonky Media Server...

I am new to Handbrake and a novice at encoding in general so please forgive me if it is an ignorant question.

Thanks,
Lee

You can use H.264 as the encoder but then you can not use AC3 (5.1) as the audio codec with H.264 because xbox 360 does not support h.264 with 5.1 channel audio.

If you want to use H.264 then your best option is to use MP3 as your audio codec. I'm not sure about the AAC though, you can try and see if that works but mp3 should definately work.

I encode my files as xvid + AC3, then stream them to my xbox 360 using TVersity and everything works perfect. You might face jerky/jittery problem while streaming avi to xbox 360 but that can be fixed easily. Let me know if you face that issue. Lets first get your xbox to start playing some videos.

I was previously using Fairuse 2.6 to make Xvid with mp3 audio and I had no issues...

I had read on various forums about the H.264 encoder and that some people feel it provides a better picture with a smaller file size...

I decided to use handbrake to test out encoding some of my ripped movies with H.264 using the xbox 360 presets...

In version .92 I couldn't get it to work for what ever reason, it would stall on task 2 of 2 when I had selected the .avi file type.

I am using the newest snapshot of Handbrake and I was hoping to get a H.264 .avi file to run on my xbox 360. The newest snapshot seems to have fixed what ever issue I had with encoding H.264 with the .avi file type...

However I am still not able to play it via xbox 360 as I get the file type error...

I can retry it with the xvid encoder but that kind of defeats my purpose...

I am a novice when it comes to re-encoding ripped DVD's to DivX but I thought it was pretty straight forward based on what I read on xbox.com

Code: Select all
Q: What does the Xbox 360 console support for H.264?

A: The Xbox 360 console supports the following for H.264:

    * File extensions: .mp4, .m4v, mp4v, .mov, .avi
    * Containers: MPEG-4, QuickTime
    * Video profiles: Baseline, main, and high (up to level 4.1)
    * Video bit rate: 10 Mbps with resolutions of 1920 × 1080 at 30 fps. See the question about max bit rate, resolution, and frames per second.
    * Audio profiles: AAC, 2-channel, Low Complexity
    * Audio max bit rate: No restrictions. See the question about max bit rate, resolution, and frames per second.

Since H.264 is supported with AAC Audio...I selected that in the newest snapshot and didn't change any of the default settings...

I tried both .mp4 and .avi for the output file type...

neither worked and the .mp4 file didn't even show up in the video file listing on my xbox...

I must be screwing something up...just can't figure it out...it should be simple and straight forward and I am managing to mess that up lol...

If you want h.264 for xbox 360, then choose the following :
1. Encoder H.264 (x264) as encoder
2. File container as mp4 (saves as *.mp4)
3. Audio codec - AAC 2 channel only ( 5.1 channel won't work on xbox 360 with h.264)

When the encoding is done and you have your .mp4 file, just rename the file to .avi and check on your xbox, it show up fine and hopefully play too.
Even though mp4 file is supported by xbox360, your streaming server might not be supporting mp4 files so thats why maybe mp4 files don't show up in xbox. Renaming the file to avi should solve the problem.

Thanks for the info...I did the above steps and it worked like a charm for me...changing the file extension after encoding it .mp4 worked for me...

Last question...

Is it best practice to define what resolution your TV is outputting when encoding? Or just leave it to what ever the aspect ratio is detected at?

For instance...

My LCD tv does 1920 X 1080
I picked one of my ripped kid's movies "The Reef" which shows up with an aspect ratio of 1.33

So when I left it at 1.33 and encoded it, the display via Xbox 360 leaves black bars on each side to maintain the aspect ratio...

Ideally I would like widescreen display...so I was curious if there is a way around the black bars...

Thanks again for taking the time to lend some advice!

To solve your aspect ration problem, play around with the crop, no crop setting.

Also on your xbox while playing the video, you can cycle through the display options and pick the one you like.
