Oops no subtitles

Postby noClue80 » Tue Feb 05, 2008 10:52 pm

hello, sorry if this is a silly question. I did a search but could not find anything that answered it, but apologies if I overlooked something.

I tried encoding my first dvd today for use on an ipod. All seemed to go fine..until I realised that there were no subtitles. I have an entire japanese language dvd with no subtitles

I looked in the options etc and noticed there is an Audio & Subtitles tab. However the subtitle drop down box just has none in it. Is there anyway I can include the subtitles? I am using the Win GUI version 0.9.1

Or alternatively, if it is not possible to select the subtitles, is there anyway I can select the english Audio?

Thank you

jj

Which GUI build are you using? Click -> About to find out (Handbrake version and GUI build version should appear on this screen). I'm ripping a foreign film as I type. I forgot to make a subtitle selection so I'll probably have to "do-over" my copy to get it right; however, I just checked and see that I have 3 subtitle options in the drop down list: English, French, and Spanish. Perhaps you need to select your movie track first and then check the Audio & Subtitle tab for subtitle options.

I'm using 2.4.1 as well. Trying to rip a foreign dvd that has subtitles (which I checked I can select in Nero just in case something was odd with the DVD). But in Handbrake, I also just get "None" in the subtitle dropdown. Any clues? Fingers crossed someone can point me in the right direction. Ta

When you say "select the track", how do I do this?

The only place I can see with "track" is on the audio and subtitle tab. I see "Track 1:" which is always automatic (nothing else in dropdown) and "Track 1 Mix:" which has a few different options for stereo and surround but it doesn't matter which one I choose here - the subtitle dropdown is always "none".

From the start: what I normally do is click the "folder" radio button, and browse for the "VIDEO_TS" folder on the DVD (it then accesses the disc for a while).
Then I choose my encoding preset and target location/output filename and then press go. Is there something I should be doing differently? Thanks for your help.

Perhaps you've been lucky with previous copy attempts and the auto selected track was the right one (i think it usually is). Anyway, so far you are following the right process: insert DVD, in the Source section of the GUI click on browse and then navigate to the VIDEO_TS directory and click Open or OK (can't remember off hand what the button says). Select your preferred preset from the right hand preset navigation pane (press the Show Presets if you don't see them). Now, I normally go look at the Source section of the GUI and click on Title drop down list. Here you will see a bunch of tracks (very useful is you are copying multiple shows from a single DVD like a television series). I always look for the longest track in this list, and, when in doubt, I double check the time of the track with what the running time on the movie box. Finally, I click on the browse button in the Destination section of the GUI and set a destination directory and filename for the final output file. After I did all of that I clicked on the Audio & Subtitles tab in the lower portion of the GUI. When I click on Subtitles drop down list I see various subtitle options: English, French, and Spanish. All that being said, I think you have to make all of the necessary selections before you'll see available subtitle options. Try that and see what happens. Good luck.

As for making a copy with the audio dubbed in english, yes I believe there is a way to do it. I recently copied La Femme Nikta (great movie). It's a French movie which I usually watch in French with subtitles; however, when I made a recent copy to watch on my iPod it copied "automatically" dubbed in English. Can't say how it did it but I do plan to do some experimentation in the near future to figure it out.

Ok, nice one. It was the bit about selecting "track" in the source section that I was missing. I've never bothered with that step (didn't know it was there....)

Once I've chosen the right track, the subtitles appear.

Thanks.
