Problem with Soft Subs

Postby GregC09 » Fri Jan 01, 2010 7:02 am

I've run into a problem with some SRTs going into my videos. I'm using SubRip 1.5b4 (if that's relevant) to get the subs. By default, most SRTs output through SubRip are saved in ANSI format. However, the error I run into is I have to save as Unicode instead.

On to HandBrake. The SRT is already saved as Unicode, so I go into setting up my encode. Add the SRT like as normal, use the default CharCode (UTF-8) as format and English as SRT language, run a test, play it on QT & VLC and see what I got. Played on QT, subtitles are detected, but nothing is displayed. VLC 1.0.3: No subs found. After all, the actual SRT language is English. Why don't the subs work?

For some reason, HandBrake didn't find any subs in your SRT file.

I'm going through the documentation again and will be redoing the job to find if I even did the SRT correctly. This is weird. I'm gonna make some changes the first chance I get. I'll see how that goes.

I went through the documentation again to see if did something wrong. I did, so I redid the process. I got the same result. Where do I go from here?
Code: Select all
[13:55:28] mux: track 3, 0 frames, 0 bytes, 0.00 kbps, fifo 8

In addition, what does this mean?
Code: Select all

I believe SubRip generates Unicode SRT files in UTF-16.
Could you retry you test specifying the Srt CharCode as UTF-16 and report back?

I tried changing the character code to UTF-16 and I got it working! I'll just mention that in my activity log I got no...
Code: Select all
ERROR: Invalid byte for codeset in input, discard byte

Turns out SubRip does output Unicode SRTs in UTF-16. Guess I'll be using that from now. Thanks :)
