Does Handbrake support the reverse of cropping?

Postby Glidos » Mon Sep 14, 2009 1:52 pm

Hi,
Does Handbrake provide a way to add black borders to a movie? I.e., doing the sort of
letter boxing commonly seen in DVDs of 2.x aspect ratio films.

Sorry, no activity log because I don't really have any activity to show. Hope
that's ok.

Cheers,
Paul.

No, Handbrake does not support matting... although I'm not sure why you would need it.

Sorry, didn't notice the reply.

The reason why it would be useful is that I have a MythTV system that drives a PAL CRT TV. The way to do this to get best quality is to use a 720x576 screen buffer. That works great for PAL content, which is mostly what I play. But if I play other material of different resolution Myth doesn't use a very high quality scaling method. I get better results if I first use Handbrake to convert to 720x576 (with the right pixel aspect ratio). Handbrake does a great job of this when starting from 1.78 aspect clips, but if I'm starting with something cinematic, I have to crop off the edges when I'd rather add black areas above and below.
